.....

so those are the 4 emails. I dont know what I should do. go for it, or not. Its $1000 bucks.. so Im kinda getting freaked

Ebay....

Well, you didn't put any details regarding your potential purchase, so for starters, I wouldn't know if you are getting ripped off, gear-wise, at $1000 or not.
Sales-wise, so far I don't see red flags. Apart from the mild hustle in e-mail 2 ("Hope noone will offer more")
he is more than willing to go with E-Bay payment policy, so that's assuring. But I come back to: what are you buying for $1000 plus shipping and what is he promising it is?

Best,

CC

Errr ... what's his feedback record? How big is the item? Why were you trying to pay by cheque?

If he's asking you to send a Western Union payment, it's most likely a scam...

If he claims that "You are protected by eBay Insurance, up to $100,000" (or something like that), it's most likely a scam...

If he claims the item is in a eBay warehouse, ready for shipment, it's most likely a scam...

If you didn't win it through the actual auction/bidding process (i.e. your user id is listed as the winner on the actual auction page), it's most likely a scam...

I'd be wary!

Sounds funny, and I've seen some weird auction stuff going on myself on ebay. The "Please contact us before you bid". Then you contact to get the response "I'll offer this for "x" amount of $$ if you buy it now". A few hours later, the auction is ended, totally gone from ebay and nothing is really completed yet.

I will say one thing to you that you MUST make sure of. If you get ANY emails from ebay, especially in your case, make sure you check the headers in the email for the source of where it came from. It's very easy to spoof or fake where it looks the email is coming from. The from line could easily say "Ebay", etc and even something like "verify@ebay.com". Looking at the headers should confirm a valid email domain.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck to you.

These days I wouldn't do any kind of "unofficial deal" with any seller that wasn't within driving distance, if I can go pick up the item and pay for it at the same time in person that's okay, otherwise I would only do the full auction and then use ebay's escrow service, it's the only way to be safe, and as far as I'm concerned, a seller who can't be bothered to use ebay's escrow service for whatever reason on expensive items is not to be trusted.

I got burned on a 860 dollar 24x8 console once, (plus 100 dollars in shipping IIRC), because the seller packaged it very poorly, it arrived here when I wasn't home to refuse it (package damaged), and FEDEX would not cover it under the insurance due to the poor packaging job, and of course I had paid the seller at the end of the auction so he already had my money, he was on the west coast of Canada and I am on the east coast of the US. I was shit out of luck, buying the shipping insurance and getting the shipping company to pay an insurance claim are two completely different things, while this wasn't any kind of a scam, it was an EXPENSIVE LESSON LEARNED.

For me, with high dollar items, especially large heavy fragile ones, it's either escrow, or an in person pickup/payment, anything else is just a huge gamble.

How much money can you afford to throw away?

Totally. Any purchases over about $200 I'd use an escrow service. They are only about $10 - and it guarantees you get what you want out of the trade.

there is never a sure way to tell... just trust your gut. get their phone number if you can... then you can google search that and if they are listed you can get an address.
