Anyone hereabouts have one of these?
Mine is the only one I ever seen.
Had it since 1981.
Can't seem to find any on e-bay or elsewhere to
establish its worth (not that I'm selling).
Excellent guitar!

My uncle had an Alverez Yairi acoustic, dont know which model but it was a sweet guitar.... I remember it was really light colored, real blonde...

It was nice....

Hi Kel,
If you'd like I'll send you a picture.
Mine isn't blonde.
You can't imagine how hard it has been to find anyone
who has a DY55 model.
I bought it 1981 for $600.
I've compared it to Martins, Taylors .....
I didn't buy them.....
I didn't trade....

Thanks

've got a DY 48 from about the same time period. I paid about $400 for mine. At the time, I had no idea of the quality of the instrument I was buying. Right now, I'd put it in the same category as the stuff I'm seeing new in the $800 price bracket. Avery nice guitar for the money!

Sure, post a pic, that'd be cool...

My uncle's guitar played real smooth, he was gonna sell it to me pretty cheap, till I mentioned that it played better than his other one..
so he decided that he didn't wanna sell it... He sold the other one instead..

I shoulda kept my mouth shut.. or told him it was just "ok"...I could of got it for a couple hundred bucks....

Oh well...

I have an Alverez Yairi as well I got it years ago as well, and to be honest I am not sure if the are even being made any more. I will take some pics of mine tonight when I get home to share.

Kelly,
Thanks very much for the link. It lead to a nice forum site.
Now I might be able to find out a bit more.

Excellent guitar

The Yairi's are excellent guitars. I have a DY 58 and it is one of the sweetest guitars I have ever played.

I've got a '83 "Silver Fawn" DY-54. As fine a guitar as I've played anywhere. Gonna keep her till she dies ( or I die. )

I appreciate the jumping on by everyone here!
I've been searching elsewhere also for a DY55.
I'm almost beginning to think it's a typo on the inner label.
Must be worth a fortune!
Still not giving it up or selling, and from what I read it seems
that anyone who has a DY(whatever #) loves it and will not
part with it.
A Martha Stuart moment for sure. (It's a good thing)
Eventually, someone who has a DY55 will show up.
I'll just keep bumping this!

For those who responded here and have a Yarii, I'll share what
I learned.

With no success on line excepting for hearing from those who
own simlilar models and vintage I finally got an answer from the guys at a store where I buy much stuff. In looking in the
Orion 'Blue Book', they found that my (and other models you
may own and love) now will fetch a whopping $150 in trade
for something that originally sold for $550-600 back in 1978-82
thereabouts. I nearly freaked!

Knowing full well that what I have in my hands has beat hands
down other guitars that I have tried it is puzzling to hear that
'well, it isn't vintage'.

So, the question is: How old constitutes 'vintage' for a guitar?

I'm still keeping it, always intended to, was just curious.

yeah I paid about $600 for mine in '83/'84. I don't think any of the yairis have much resale value.... but I don't care. It's worth a lot to me. Resale value for guitars is based on what people perceive as cool...cool names...Martin, Gibson....but perceptions many times don't reflect reality. If you're a good guitarist, you can make a very fine sounding recording with an old worthless Yairi. You can enjoy an old guitar that plays wonderfully and tunes almost perfectly. And you can enjoy knowing that you're playing a $150 guitar that sounds as good as many Martins or Gibsons or.......

Hi 60's Guy...
I own a Yari Alvarez DY-55 also. They call it the Anniversary Model. I too have been trying to find out more info on this magnificent guitar. I bought it brandy new in 1977 and I wouldn't part with it unless someone offered a million for it..hehe! It's a great sounding and easy to play instrument.

I would have responded sooner, but I just found this site doing a search for the DY55.
Have you had any more luck tracking it down?

the Yarii has a very fine rep. I have never heard one bad comment about the way they sound or play.

I have an Alvarez acoustic (not a Yarii) and if you treat it properly and use bronze 80/20 strings (the phosphobronze ones sound like poo) it will sing for you !

The bridge pizo pickup is also very nice !

I've seen several Yari classicals go anywhere from 1 to 2K on ebay. These were all handmade in Japan. My nicest classical is a Yamaha 245xx from the mid 70's it makes every Ramirez I've demoed at GC sound like crap.

If you like it and it plays great, hang onto it or give it to someone you love. Doesn't matter what the Blue Book value is.

One of the nice things about buying a good Martin or Gibson though, is they'll always hold their dollar value or appreciate.

I worked in a music store for many years. We had a house brand acoustic built for us by Sada Yairi. I got one for my wife...wonderfully balanced sound and played like a dream!
