I recorded at home before but I know theres so much more I can do. What are the basic things you need to start recording? When I started all I had was a microphone and a pc. After reading around I don't got a clue what most of the words you guys use, I really need to learn. So now I need anyone's help. so far I know I need a:
-Microphone
-A recording program
-microphone preamps
let me know which ones you guys prefer and will not cost an arm and a leg to own.

and also let me know what else I need,if its really need. Trying to record my cousin's rap thang so no need to record any instruments. Thanks!

A good set of reference monitors is very important. Good luck.

Are you committed to a computer-based approach?

There's a steep learning curve associated with using computers and software to record. Such a system can be very hard to get working right, especially if you feel clueless about the terms used in places like instruction manuals and websites. :)

Would you consider a standalone recorder like this Tascam DP-01FX? It has effects built in, and you'll be recording the day you get it. With the computer system, I'd count on a lot of study and trouble-shooting time before you record your first track!

(Disclaimer: Despite being an "old-timer", I am not at all down on computer recording systems. They are just not always appropriate for beginners.)

I second CAG's thought. A Tascam Portastudio like the one CAG suggested would be a great thing to have. Even down the road if you switch to computer based recording, you can use it to record on site and such.

I love recording on my computer, but i started with a mixer and a Mini-Disc recorder. The first time i opened Logic I thought my head was gonna explode.

What's your budget like?
