all these outs...and only 2 speakers???

Apparently this has been bugging me for awhile now, and only just realized it. Im looking at a serious upgrade from my soundblaster 16 to a REAL soundcard. At this very moment the flyer open before me has two different cards that have caught my eye; ECHO-GINA24, and as well the ESI-WAVETERMINAL 192 L.

My question is, why is there 8 out's?...when there is only 2 in's.

Im also looking into studio monitors, and as far as I know they come in pairs, like most speakers. So that means they only need too be plugged into a maximum of 2 slots, not 8.

Everyday Im here I read a lot and learn a lot, but it never ceases to amaze me how much I dont know.
 
You can use extra outputs to drive different headphone mixes (with an external headphone amp), run to external effects and rerecord the signal, or run to external recorders.

If you are going to do everything in the computer and don't need fancy monitor mixes for different musicians than you probably don't need all those outs. You could get by with an Audiophile or Delta44.

hmmm...well I looked again and yes it is 2 in's and 8 out's both in the flyer and the website.
Now if only I had an external effects unit for rerecording, not that i really know much anyways but its good to know. I actually have an effects unit built into my Blu Devil amp (hehe ya its a behringer)...in which case I might be able to use outs for that purpose.
Generally speaking, I think I was much rather looking at something like the 44, or even so grandiose as a 1010 because of the added ins...(i have drums, and apparently 1 should be sticking effects (compressor) on certain drums but not all of the drums?). I was originally looking at the audiophile 24 96, but it only has 2 ins i believe.
 
This is just my humble opinion, but i'm tempted to have more outs on my soundcards than in's.

if there's one thing I can't stand is trying to mix down on a PC. It pisses me off. Sure, you can get control surfaces etc, but to be honest, I FAR prefer using a nice analogue desk (okay, Allen & Heath aint great, but at least it aint Bear Ringer):D

So, with more output's, I tend to think of my PC more like a dedicated hard disk recorder. If I want to use some plugin's etc, then i can do a small submix down to stereo channels. and then do direct outs for everything else.

That sounds strange to me, but, it IS a computer component. If it don't have a lots of knobs on it and a bunch of in's and out's I'm pretty well lost.
