Insane Genious!
Once upon a time, when I was poor, I saw the coolest bass I have ever seen. I've always had a soft spot for unusual things, and this bass was kinda special:

1. I was 8-stringed (you know, like a twelve-string guitar, but a bass!)
2. It had an "automatic damper", i e a rubber pad you could raise towards the strings.
3. It was stereo. Yup. Don't know what that means, but it was.

I drooled over it for some time, but of course, by the time I had the money it was long gone. Now even the music store is gone...

It would be really fun to figure out what this was. It wasn't very expensive, maybe in todays money $300-$500. The design wasn't boring, but not outrageous either, and I think it was sunburst. These things make me conclude that it was NOT a Rickenbacker. Also, as far as I can see, although Rickenbacker has made stereo basses, and 8-string basses, and basses with fampers, they seem not to manufacture an 8-string stereo bass with dampers. :)

Does anybody have ANY idea? Have any of you guys seen anything like this?

I am pretty sure that hagstrom made an 8 string bass at one
time. I also think I remember Jack Bruce Playing some kind
of 8 string bass. Hope this helps.

Noel Redding, played a Hagstrom on Axis Bold as Love, he said he really liked the sound, but that it was very hard to play.

Cute bass

I liked the Hagström. Loads of strings, loads of buttons. :) No damper or stereo though, so it's not the one I saw. I still want one. :D

In fact I can't find info on ANY basses with a string damper... It COULD be a specially made Stereo Rickenbacker 4003/S8 with somebody adding a damper later.

What Jack Bruce played was a Fender Bass VI, a six-string bass...

Hamer has made some 8 and even 12 string basses. I think the bass dude in Cheap Trick plays a 12 string bass.
