I have a Tascam 788 with an approved CD-R drive and cable. I aso have a PC-based DAW system. Now, the 788 is a great device, pretty darn flexible, and gives up good results. Problem? I am finding the time it takes to transfer .wav files is a bit more than I can deal with, only because time is an issue for me. I'm thinking I'd rather have something with USB transfer capability, even, maybe, if the features were a tad more limited.

I'm doing all my mixing, etc., in-the-box, so extensive editing is not an issue. But 24-bit recording would be good, and 4-8 inputs simultaneous is necessary.

I'm looking for convenience here- and something used as well. If I find something, I'll be selling off the 788- and need to make a good enough trade-off that I don't miss it too much!

Any advice? Thanks for reading...

I got the same problem, if it was possible to transfer wav files from the 788 to an external disk instead of cds, then it would be ok, but thats never gonna happen. The best solution I could see would be to sell the 788 and go for the korg d888, its 16bit but with the analog style mixer and overall simple layout I think your recordings would sound equal to the 24bit 788. I've used the 788 for a few years and mainly have used 16bit for everything, (the few times I used 24bit there was no noticable change to my ears). I did notice a great improvement in sound when i mixed the 6 analog outputs out thru an anaolog mixer, with descent faders and "manual" eq.
Thats just my opinion, but like you, I have the burner with my 788 but I hardly ever had the time to burn backups or wav files to cds- about 45 mins for a 15minute piece of music with maybe 6 tracks? Thats just too much time wastin.

Yeah, and the more I revisit this issue the more resolve comes forward about it. I'm pretty much about there for decision time, and nearly sure I'm selling it.

My power amp (for my bass rig) is dying- maybe I'lll trade the 788/burner off for a used QSC Powerlight...

Thanks for chiming in, Michaelfish.
