Aligning tape heads

I have a friend who has just aquiered a 1" 16 track (I'm not sure of the brand) and it apparently need to have the tape heads aligned. This is obviously not a job for the novice but I am interested in researching the procedures for maintaining analog recorders. Any good sites out there?

How you align the head on each model is really something that should be specified in the service manual of the tape recorder, though.
