My soundcard, Soundblaster AWE 64 gold, has a dumb midi in/out joystick port. I have this connected to the midi out/thru of the SR16. I have the midi in of the SR16 connected to a midi controller (evolution mk-125) which only has a midi out. The Cakewalk settings are
send midi start/continue/stop/clock
use start, never continue
use midi start position pointer
The clock is also set to midi sync.
My Alesis settings are midi channel????(I was using midi omni in order to use the evolution midi controller but the midi thru doesnt respond when I do this)
Drum in on V1 (velocity sensitive)
Drum out Off (hmmm...)
Clock in is on
Clock out is off
midi thru in on
prg chng is on
note map is on normal
The end result is, I want cakewalk to be the master, cotrolling the SR16, and still be able to have other thacks on the cake play midi specific to a channel other than 10 which will contain soundfonts. Also there are audio tracks in the mix too. I wast to have the midi data, as well as the audio recording, visible on the cake so I can manipulate ta data using cake's functionality, etc. and record the respective audio to a cakewalk track. Am I too idealistc? I know I'n too confused. Please help.

A few questions:

1. I assume you have the midi out from the joystick port to the midi in of the midi controller, and from there to the midi in of the sr16. Why not hook it from the midi out of the joystick directly to the midi in on the sr16? Then you can rule out one more problem.

2. When you say, "I want cakewalk to be the master, cotrolling the SR16, and still be able to have other tracks on the cake play midi specific to a channel other than 10 which will contain soundfonts. " do you mean that you want other tracks on cw to play midi specific sr16 sounds or from another midi source such as a keyboard?

3. Are you recording a pattern or song playing from the sr16 to cw, or are you actually hitting the pads on the sr to record sounds to cw?
If you are recording a song or pattern to cw you should have:
clock in - off clock out - on
drum in - on drum out - off

If you are actually hitting the pads to record directly to cw:
clock in - on clock out - off
drum in - off drum in - on
(then to hear playback from cw, you must set the drum in back to on)

You should have the sr set to midi channel 10 (though you can set it to other midi channels, but cw recognizes 10 as the default drum channel)

Let me know if this helps

I have changed the connections and the settings as recommended but still no action. I tried many different configs for cakewalk and i feel one of my problems is in selecting proper track properties for the track to record/play the SR16. Also, shouldn't I be getting midi indications in the sytem tray when I strike a pad on the SR16? I am not in any configuration that I have tried. This seems to signal to me a bad midi connect on the SR16. What do you think? i would love to do all of that stuff from step 3 definitely. From step 2, I just want to have some tracks playing midi that is backed with soundfonts as well as one or two tracks of SR16 data. Is this enough data? Sorry for the long response time, from dogg to mutt.

Hmmmmmmmmm dogg -

Let's see!?!?!

Go into tools/midi devices in CW and select everything (should have midi mapper and whatever your joystick connection is listed). JUst pick everything that's listed.

Try a different midi cable (or make sure the midi cable works with something else)

In CW - go to tools/instruments and make sure that the sr16 is matched to your joystick midi connection. If you don't see the sr16 in the right column, click on define and select the sr16 from the list. If it's not there, click import and use the helps to find it.

In CW - in the track view, go to the source box just right of the M/S/R boxes and check to make sure you have Midi channel 10 for the source, port should have your midi connect with alesis sr16 chosen (if not, click on the instruments box at right), and channel set to 10. The other boxes don't matter until you want to select a specific drum set, but first you need to make a connection.

If this doesn't work, go to www.garrigus.com
It's a cakewalk site and the forum is a good place to get questions answered.

Good luck!! Let me know how it turns out.
