Hello there, can anyone help? I'm trying to use the SR-16's sounds in Cubase LE via midi. I've connected the midi ins and outs of the SR-16 and my Tascam 122L souncard. The 122L is connected to my PC via USB. I also have a M-Audio Keystation 49e connected to my PC via USB. Many thanks for your help in advance.

Derbs,
What is it that isn't working? Assuming that you want to record and playback midi data, your setup is correct. When you state, "I'm trying to use the SR-16's sounds in Cubase LE via midi", are you indicating that you want to record the SR-16's audio output in Cubase? If this is the case, you will need to connect audio cables, as midi does not carry the audio signal, just the note data from the keyboard.

If midi vs. audio connections are confusing, see my post here:

Hello, thanks for your quick response. I should also mention that my 122L is also audio wired up to an amp/monitors. I can record and playback VST instruments that are part of the Cubase LE package (Universal Sound Mod & IM-7). I have installed the SR-16 via Midi Device Manager and followed the set up instructions that came with the machine. However when I open a new midi track and try and select the SR-16 all the options have [Emulated] after them. My Cubase LE version is 1.0.10. Many thanks.

Are you:
1. Attempting to record the audio output of the SR-16 in Cubase? or
2. Attempting to record the midi note output of the SR-16 in Cubase?

I think I misunderstood your original post.

Hello, option 2. I'm trying to record the midi from my SR-16. Basically I want to record a midi drum track by tapping it out on the keyboard, as I do with the VST IM-7. Then I edit it to iron out any rough bits or add bits. But I want to hear the SR-16 patches when tapping out an original rhythm and on playback. I've successfully recorded audio from SR-16 in Cubase, but I find setting the SR-16 cumbersome and time consuming. Many thanks.

So your setup should look like:
SR-16 MIDI I/O <--> 122-L MIDI I/O
122-L USB <--> PC

*Set SR-16 to TX MIDI.
*Set up Software track in Cubase; Input set to the MIDI jack where the SR-16 is hooked up; MIDI Channel 10 (The SR-16 is a drum machine, so it should be transmitting note data on Ch 10).
*Assign your drum instruments in Cubase to output on the stereo buss.

If you want to play back the finished MIDI drum track to the SR-16, then just assign the MIDI track you created in Cubase to output on the MIDI jack where the SR-16 is hooked up, assuming you connected both Ins and Outs between the SR-16 and the 122-L. You may have to set the SR-16 to RX MIDI. Then you'd connect the audio outs to the audio inputs on the 122-L.

Hello, I've installed the SR-16 in the MIDI device manager. Not sure what the drop down is for that say Not connected. I have options of MS MIDI Mapper [Emulated], MS GS Wavetable Synth [Emulated], USB Keystation 49e [Emulated] and 2-TASCAM US-122L MIDI [Emulated]. Not sure which one to pick? In the MIDI Inputs I've picked All MIDI Inputs. And the MIDI out I've selected SR-16 (2-TASCAM US-122L MIDI [Emulated]. I can't see the SR-16 for MIDI In. Why are there so many options? Confused.

OK, your "MIDI device manager" is for controlling the SR-16 with SysEx or MMC commands - that's not what you want.

What I was intending was for you to connect the SR-16's MIDI In's and Out's to the 122-L's MIDI In's and Out's. Assuming the 122-L is installed as your MIDI interface, you would create a software track in Cubase and assign it's input as "MIDI In __" with whatever midi port the SR-16 is plugged into.

Hello, my SR-16's midi ins/outs are connected to my US-122L's in/outs. How do I check that the 122L is installed as my midi interface? Many thanks.
