I am in the market for a drum machine and was leaning towards the Zoom MRT3 for two reasons. first, I have heard it, and it sounds good for a drum machine, but more importantly, it has a feature that you can tap with the tempo of music or someone playing, to help lock in the perfect BPM.

this would be useful to me when recording and cutting up a song to add a bridge for instance, or another chorus, or an extended but more dynamic chorus. I could just create a brand new beat but match that BPM and know that it will fit perfectly.

My main question is this....does the ALESIS SR16 have this type of feature??? ( does any other drum machines in this pricerange have this feature? ) Thanks everyone.

Try the Akai MPC series. I have a MPC2000xl and I love it. You can sample any sound you want.

I know I'm reviving an old thread here, but since this might be used as a reference for others...
the correct answer is YES, the SR16 has that feature.

tap the stop button several times in the tempo you want, it takes the average, then when you click start it goes at that tempo. Obviously you have to be not in play mode when you do this.... the stop button should have been a dead giveaway for that bit.

Anyway, yes you can do it. also if you plugin a foot pedal you can tap it to set the tempo before you start the beat playing (one pedal sets tempo (also does fills and changes between a and b version of the beat), and the other pedal starts and stops the drum machine (another way to get it in time... stop it before the end of the measure then start it again right on the downbeat, in case someone jumped ahead and is too stupid to get their own rhythm back in time with the always perfect SR16... ;-)

Cheers.

PS --- been a long time since I've posted here, had another daughter (that's 3 now under 3 years old), so my time is very limited these days!
