AKG Solidtube down to $695 at 8thstreet!

This one is getting close in price range to the NTK and T3... Lets hope it hits $500 before end of year!
I know Macle likes the Solidtube, as does Shailat and Hicks, anyone else have one and have compared it to the NTK?

You really have to like a tube sound to apprecieate this mic.
It's not the one mic for all applications but it is a excellent mic for many others. I try it on all my vocalists as my #1 choice and see if it matches.

Shailat- I don't have a tube mic... yet... what sort of voices do you find it works best on?

My only encounter with "The Tube" was at the in-store demonstration setup at Mars Music, probably into a Mackie mixer, through whatever headphones they had rigged. The mic sounded hissy, spitty, and grainy, and I thought rather unpleasant on my voice (yes, even relative to other mics). It might have been in bad repair, but I did not think it warranted the price it was selling for by any stretch. The anecdotal reports I hear is that this is a love it or hate it sort of mic, so I suggest you try it before you buy it. If you like it and it works for you, I'm happy, but I would likely need a religious experience with one to turn my impression around.

It's definitely not a mic for all seasons. On some voices it really works, on others it really doesn't. Bear, I wouldn't call it hissy or spitty, I bet there was something very wrong with the one you heard.

I did allow that that was a strong possiblity. I think they had a dead solid state AT mic among the demo array at a later point. I have heard similar complaints about the tonality, though, so it's hard for me to say whether it was healthy or not.

Somebody on one of the bbs's (might've been this one) mentioned that the early SolidTubes had some PSU problems. Bad ground, noisy, or some such, that was fixed in later models. I've got one of the later ones so I've never heard what the problem sounds like. Maybe hissy, and spitty?

I read that too. He said after it was on for about an hour or so it started making noise like someone was moving a bad cable around.

That was me telling the story........

I had one of he first ones and it seemed the power supply was causing the problem. From what I understood from the dealer it was at the time a common problem that has been solved I had it fixed and have worked with one of the newer editions without a problem.
