Hi,
is this a good choice for mixing ?
AKG Q 701 Quincy Jones Signature Reference-Class Premium Headphones
My budget is 200~250$.

Never mix totally on headphones... Those 120mm drivers will cloud your brain with more bass than youre mix has. So your resulting mixes will be lacking bass. Settle for Sony 7506 at a Ben Franklin price and you'll be happy. Also bear in mind your paying for QJ's endorsement, much like beats by dre. Beats Are 7506's with a different shell.

Found two affordable models Sony Mdr7506 & ATH-M50 . Can you tell me which one is better ?

You're getting good advice about trying to mix on phones. It's not a good idea. It never works well. Since you'll probably agree down the road and will have bought phones by then........I suggest the ATH-M50's. I have a pair and they're comfortable and great for tracking......which you'll end up using them for mostly.

Another vote for the ATH-M50 headphones. I've used those, the Sony's the Fostex T-20's and a few others and the AT's are my favorite for everything.

I'm curious if anyone doesn't like the ATH-M50's who has tried them and why?

'Course I'd love to try some Grado's sometime. . . .

Sir, you are obviously uniformed. Bigger drives don't equate to more bass. Second, the q701's is in no way bass heavy or cloudy. They are based off the k701. Extremely analytical and insanely detailed with a very open soundstage. Some regard both models as actually bass shy. And yes, I have monitors. krk rp5's and mackie mr8's. In my final mix I go to my monitors but the akg's/ Beyer DT880's do a fine job before hand.

Yes, the ath50 is decent for the price. It however gets hyped because a lot of people entering into decent monitoring headphones for the first time are amazed. Compared to my q701 and beyerdynamic dt880 they pale however. Bass is super bloated, muddy and sub bass is loose. Lower mids are recessed. Highs are decent, but do not provide the same detail or imaging. The overall sound stage is small and unrealistic. Good for tracking yes. But for mixing the soundstage alone in the other headphones I have is greatly appreciated for mixing. I also own a pair of grado sr-60's. They are ok. Has that grado "colored" sound that im not too fond of. Very foward mids and too much midbass and lacking sub bass. highs roll early and soundstage is in your face and very narrow.
