AKG 414 or AT4050?

So I need to decide which one to get. Between the DAV BG1 and the FMR RNP I decided to go with the RNP because it's cheaper (yes money is an issue with this poor highschool kid) and after hearing them side by side, I really couldn't hear a "hundreds of dollars" difference, if much of a difference at all.

Now I need to decide wether I want an at4050 or an akg 414. I heard these two side by side on a grand piano too and honestly couldn't hear too much of a difference either. Maybe it's just my lack of "engineers ears" or maybe there just isn't too much of a difference, I dunno. But either way, they both seemed to sound great, and the at4050 is considerably less expensive. I'm looking for "big sounding" vocals. I record lots of accoustic guitar and grand piano.

Thanks!!

While I consider both mics wonderful at "what goes in, comes out", I don't consider either "big"
Big mics for me include:
Studio P T3
Rode NTK
Groove Tubes MD1b
Brauner anything
Marshall 77
AT 4047
Gentlemen, you may fire when ready!

I've got a matched pair of 414 XL IIs and a not so matched pair of 4050s.

I like 'em both. The 414s are brighter. 4050's sound great through a tube pre.

If you're strapped for cash... the 4050's will do nicely.

If you're looking for that "big" sound, a TRUE tube mic is the way to go.

I may not own one, but I've used the NTK enough to know what a real tube mic can do. Hell, the NTK isn't even considered top-of-the-line in many cases. But it would be more than enough for most home studios.

Remember, the mic is only partly responsible for the overall sound. The preamp, converters, source, etc. are all contributing factors.

I like the 4050 every bit as much as I do the 414.

It's a workhorse.

As for the whole "big vocal" thing ... big vocals come from big voices. There isn't a magic mic or mic pre that is going to make them sound bigger.

Work on your technique and delivery, and have patience with yourself.

thanks:)

I just found a 4050 that still may be available.....

for 250 bucks.

!!!!!

That's a deal. Buy it. You won't regret it. I've got 2 AT4050s and 2 C414 BULS. Both are great. The 4050 is a real workhorse mic.

That is a good deal. If that falls through there is a dealer on ebay that sells them new for $412.I bought a 4033 from them and have been tempted to order 4050 as well.

Depending on your voice, I think you might be happier singing through the 4050. Vocal recording isn't my favorite app for the 414. Bigger is really hard to define, but I *think* you're more likely to find it with the 4050.

I've discovered thru trial and re-trial that voice is the only thing I do not like to use my 414 on....
