My band has begun a new recording project...I took a piece from the drummers scratch track...I added some EQ, but not much.

recomendations are very welcome:

 
FYI...it does take a bit for the drums to come on.

Wrong balance , no panning and phase problems

if you have used overheads pan hi-hat side left and the
other side right.
put the hi-hat down and pan to left
pan the snare 50-75% left
keep the basdrum in the center
cut some low(mid) from the tom's
pan the tom's between snaredrum and right
(eg hi tom 25% left, lo tom 25% right, floor tom 75 right)

oh ya...I haven't even panned it yet...I was looking more for eq advice...or should I pan...then eq?

Ok EQ

TOMS /SNARE
Cut a few db @ 60 HZ
Cut a few db @ 200-400 hz

OHead/HHat
Cut a few db @ 800 hz
add a few db @ 10-12 Khz

Btw how did you track it (mic's used placement ect)

lets see...B1 on the kick...about 6 inches from the head...one mic each of the toms...floor, and 3 others...2 sm58's as overheads about a foot from the cymbals...and one mic for the snare...not sure if I used B3 on the snare on that track. 8 tracks in all...they have not been panned yet. I will attempt that this morning...as I said this is just a scratch track...I want to get it right before the real thing. Thanks!
 
ok...new track is up...I had thought you leave everything center to EQ that way you could get it all to 'fit'...so, I threw that out the window and did some lite panning...probably not enough...I had also though the snare stayed center as well as the kick...is this not the case?

I think it's more important that the drumkit is recorded proper to the 8 tracks and do the pan/eq later in the mix.

2 sm58's as overheads about a foot from the cymbals

Try 2 use condensators mic's +/- 1 feet above the cymbels as overheads instead on dynamic mic's

I hear som phase interference, do you kno the 3 to 1 rule ?
it bassicly mean that the a mic. should at least at least three times the distance that either microphone is from it’s intended sound source.

I personaly like a 'true' picture of the drum(like standing in front of it).
but in pop/rock the snare is mostly centered.

whatever you have. but the best(read natural) eq is mic placement.

unfortunately, I don't have any more condensor mic's. Can you explain the 3 to 1 rule a little more?

the b1 ,b3 you mentioned aren't condensators ?

3:1 rule

when you use multiple mic's to record
eg . mic a : hihat
mic b : snare

mic a has a disntance of 5 cm from the hihatt
mic b has a disntance of 2 cm from the snare

to apply the 3:1 rule then
mic b (snare) should have of at least 15 (3X5) cm from the hihatt
and mic b(hh) should have of at least 6 (3X2) cm from the hihatt

interesting...I will measure up those mics to see...so are you saying I should take the B1 off the kick and use it as a right/left mic instead? Then use the sm58 on the kick?
 
Hmmm.... quite a number of problems with the sound of those drums...

As well - some questionable timing there too.....

oh ya, the timing is shit...the drummer had a tough time playing to himself on an earlier scratch track...I am strictly trying to get the sound right...then, I am am going to record a new track...after that...his timing is open for ridicule :)
 
question on the snare...do you guys usually mic above or below?
 
I usually mic above and below, but only record the below track if you have tracks to spare. Many times I end up not using the "below" mic at all in the final mix, and when I do end up using it, it is never as loud as the top mic. If you do mic the underside of the snare, be sure to reverse the phase on that mic.

1- B1
1- B3
2- SM 58

and I have 8 tracks to work with.
