Pinky

and The Brain...
Here it is folks, my first production in nearly a year. Long story short, after a year tinkering on guitar I made a few break-throughs and decided this was a long enough vacation. I started off easy with a rock instrumental, but I have some plans for some more aggressive recordings in the near future.

It’s a combination of the better elements of a few prior songs, and something new too. Most of you probably don't remember me, and I haven't been posting much in the past year. I welcome your fresh ears to our brand of rock.

More stuff can be heard at our homepage.

Enjoy :)

Are you running a sub synth with the bass - sounds like it.
For my ears the snare is too up front. The acoustic is well placed.
When the two lines were playing counter melody I didn't know which to listen to. I've struggled with that prob before but you do need to commit to one.
The solo tone doesn't cut through the mix very well.

Great feedback! :)

I agree on all points, well except that there isn't any synth work. I no longer own a bass so I use the acoustic guitar and drop it an octave, play the original acoustic bass line and the lowered an octave line simultaneously. It kinda works, at least well enough for now. I do plan on purchasing a cheap Ibanez bass again for doing the recordings 'right'.

Thanks for the advice, I haven't decided how I'm going to separate those lines (EQ, pan, or both). The lead can be bumped, and when I did it took over. I may need to do some EQ work there as well.

awsome song, all i would do is pull back the drum track ever so slightly and there is one part near the biggining (0:25-0:30 ish) the plucking is kinda wierd, i would turn that down to or change it. though the slow fade in was cool, personally i would have made it a bit faster comming in, but thats just me..

(note, I'm listening thrue a pair of dollar store headphones so it might sound diffrent thrue my monitors)

hope this feed back was helpful/interesting.

All feedback is useful! I often listen ot the song on several systems and headphones before I find a good compromise in the mix. On some systems the drums seem loud, but on others the guitars overpower the mix. Go figure :p.

I'm not sure about the beginning, it's never 'sounded right' to me either. Yet, when I set the wave files against the metronome everything's pretty tight. Apparently not, or maybe there's a little more looseness than in the rest of the song, which is why it stands out. Will have to look at that. Thanks :).

I really like this acoustics sound great...as does the slide...really liked the stops
around 1:10...nice twist...didn't see 'em coming and they fit nicely....the bass guitar does seem kinda booming and flabby...I think a real bass guitar would cure that.
Very interesting and eclectic listen... really enjoyed this...great job!

Hi Pinky, welcome back!

I really liked what was going on, but you really do need to get a real bass on this. Other than that, no real problems that I could see. There is a bit of lower end mud, but I suspect the pitch shifted guitar/bass line is the culprit.

Good job!

I fixed some of the issues, and of course didn't/couldn't fix others. I lowered the drums in the mix and it solved the lead disappearing because there was more room in the overall mix for the music to punch through.

Rokket, I saw your name as the last poster and realized "Hey, there's someone who actually listens to my tunes!" :p Thanks everyone for the kind words. Bass guitar is a few months away, but I'm going to experiment with getting a more beefy and realistic tone out of what I have for the next song.

:o
Actually, it's good stuff. No problem....

You hit the nail on the head - the octave-dropped acoustic is still not quite low enough/true bass frequencies, so its sits in the lower end of the guitars for much of the recording. I tried some EQ tricks and it helped, which is the only reason the recording is passible now. I might re-record the bassline down the road, this song IMO is worth a revisit someday...

Cool groove, love the acoustic sound. The early slide parts sound too thin and distant to my ears. I'd like to hear a little more of that. I like the percussion and bass feel too, it's kinda dancy groovy, cool. Sounds like you have more bass drum kick than bass guitar. The 2:46 break is sweet, lead sounds great there and beyond. Nice work ;)

Thanks for the compliments.

There's not much I can do with the bass sound until I get a real bass guitar. :(

I'd offer to record the bass for you, but I don't have any means to do it right now... :(
I have my bass with me, but no other gear.

Thanks Rokket. If you have a chance in the coming months and still feel like trying, send me a PM. I can mix down the instruments and drums (sans the current bass). Could even send some basic tabs of what I was playing, but would be interested in seeing what you had in mind too...

I'll keep you in mind if the opportunity shows itself. I know you've heard my playing before. I think I could come up with something that will fit the groove nicely.

When you are ready I can have a 2 wave file download ready in a matter of 30 minutes. One track for drums, another for instruments sans the old bass parts. All I would need back is your bass line (with as little post production as possible so I can "fit" into the mix properly), your full name for credits, and any linkage you may want form our site to your works. :)

I uploaded a revised version of this song (original link will load the latest version). I did some tweaking, mostly to getting more low-end out of the 'bass' guitar. Now it may be too boomy, at least depending on the stereo I use the bass sounds very deep. I may need to adjust some levels to get it just right, but would be looking for a few more opinions if possible ... :)
