I, like several others, live in a rental and can't do permanent sound treatments.

I've found a product which I've ordered to try out. I need to knock down reflections in my recording room. It's 14x16 with a 9' ceiling and mexican terra cotta tile floor.

Audimute on Ebay

When I get it in place, I'll report back on it's effectiveness.

BTW, if you call the guy, he will sell it to you direct at the $129 price he has as the opening bid. That way you don't have to wait for the auction to end.

I'm not associated with the seller.

It looks to me like this stuff is to block transmission of sound ( like a barrier) not to stop reflections. Again this I believe is the misconception of soundproofing and treatment. What you want is some type of absorber (panel, helmholtz, rigid fiberglas) not this stuff.

Good luck

I hope they work for you. I don't like the look of that sellers feedback. He adds his own reply to each buyers feedback, almost as if he is speaking for the buyer. That's strange...

Hangdawg - I'm not extremely educated in soundproofing and treatment. Could you do me a favor and look at the test results for this product and let me know if I bought $129 worth of moving pads or if it might at least be better than sheetrock walls, 9' ceiling and tile floor? Thanks! http://www.audimute.com/AMP.pdf

gvarko - I see what you mean regarding his feedback. However, he has his phone number in the Ebay ad and I spoke to him at length regarding this product. I'm convinced I'll receive the product but I won't be able to vouch for it's effectiveness until I get it. However, it's got to beat what I have now and is very portable for us renters.

Will keep you posted.

Yes you bought moving pads but it is still better than nothing. Although the money could probably have been better spent.

Some reading http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

To help you read those charts an absorption coefficient of 1.0 means complete absorption. Most carpet, drapes and furniture can acheive that rating over 1000hz the same way that blanket does. Where it gets hard to absorb is the frequencies under 200hz and those are what usually cause the most problems with tracking and mixing.

Isn't the phrase "affordable soundtreatment" an oxymoron? I know I just spent about $1000 on treatment. It wasn't auralex either. Had I gone that route it would have been $2000

Greatly appreciate the information!

TRK,

Will multiple layers (of any material) absorb any greater? Or, am it what it am?

Earl,

> Will multiple layers (of any material) absorb any greater? <

Yes and No. Here's the way that works:

All absorber materials absorb 100 percent at some higher frequency. Even half an inch of acoustic foam absorbs completely above maybe 2 KHz. As absorbing materials are made thicker - or you combine more of them - what happens is the absorption extends to lower and lower frequencies.

For a more thorough explanation see the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my Articles page:

I have some 4x8 x23/4" sheets of stryfoam. Could I use these as sound baffels to baffel a drum kit or amps?

No, styrofoam is not good as an absorber or as a sound baffle. It is good packing material though.

Ethan,

Thanks for answering my question!

Headed off to peruse your website... :D

Hey Earl, did you get that audimute up?

Some of us are waiting sort-of-near the edge of our cheap folding chairs.
