I'm looking for some information in regards to putting together my own home studio. I dont have a lot of money to work with , so I want to get the best bang for my bucks.

I would like to get a nice sound card that has the ability to record up to 8 channels separately into Cool Edit Pro. One card that I saw was the m-audio Delta 1010LT. It looks like it can handle the inputs. Has anyone used this card? Is it any good? Does it work with Cool Edit Pro?

I was also wondering what does the mixer need to have in order for the inputs to work ? Does the mixer have to have a "direct out" for each channel ? I've seen some Behringer boards that look like they might do the trick?

Please let me know what you think of my ideas, and what will work and what wont.

Thanks.

that interface certainly would work with CEP...

As far as a mixer, if you wanted one that would allow you to track 8 separate tracks simultaneously you would need a mixer that has inserts on each channel. There are indeed some behringers that would do the trick. I'm pretty sure the mx2004 has inserts on 8 channels. I've got the delta 1010 and am currently in the market for an alesis studio 12r which has inserts on each track, but it is a rack mixer with not as much routing as you might need.

good luck!

Ok, here comes the dumb part of my post... What do the inserts do for me ? I was under the impression that the mixer needed a "direct out" for each channel. "insert" to me seems like it would do the opposite. Please help clear things up for me ? Thanks.

the insert, if you plug the cable half way in, will act as a direct out.......depending on the mixer, it may be pre or post fader, or pre or post eq, etc.......keep that in mind when looking......

check out the Yamaha MG series for a cheap but good mixer......

HOOOLD UP!! WAIT A MINUTE!

are you saying that on some inserts..plugging it in half way reverses the signal? how would you keep the plug held in half way? I'm interested in that idea..and name a few mixers that would do that?

Okay, for an insert to work there is a send and a return. So when you plug in a TRS plug the top part and the sleeve send the signal out to something and then the tip returns it (someone correct me, I'm guessing on this). If you plug in a plug just down to the first click instead of the second, you're only engaging the SEND part of the insert, thereby turning it into a direct out.

ok so which mixers?

i do notice that double click in when inserting a cable....sometimes i actually go slow enough to think hear it. i think that might work on some behringer mixers....you think so? or as they say in the south "Ya reckon?"
