P Bass advice sought from those in the know........

Subject: '87 Fender Precision Bass Lyte.........MIJ

My son has his eye on one of these in excellent condition as a possible addition to our studio gear but neither of us are bass players so I'm hoping guys here can pass comment as we really are lacking knowledge about this style and era of Fender bass.

This bass is as I said in great condition, the body is 3 piece basswood (I think), it has active p/ups, rosewood fretboard, blah, blah...........I'll try and post a pic shortly.

All and any advice appreciated.

Mate,
The Japs made some really good Fenders, I have 2 strats a Jap and USA both are brilliant.
If you like it get it.

Clive,

Thanks mate, I was talking to a bass player friend tonight who has a clutch of Fenders and his view was much the same.

I think I've played one of those somewhere along the line. The body is a bit smaller than your standard Fender bass if I recall correctly, and that takes a little bit of getting used to, but the neck played really well. Overall, I recall them being a pretty solid bass.

I have a 1992 American P-Bass with the Lace Sensor Pickups. They are really hot. Depending on the amp you are running through they will have a lot of dynamic range from front to back and from trebble to bass.

Good luck

The above picture is not a P-Bass... it's a Deluxe Series style bass... and as said above... if you like it, get it. But remember, it's the American Made Fender basses that go up in value over time. ;)

EDIT ADDED: PS... I'd question the 87 year... you need the serial number. It would also help to see the headstock.

Thanks for the comments.

DJ, I have checked out the serial number from a h/stock pic..........definitely as I described it and I know the seller bought it second hand about 10 yrs ago.

Anyways the auction finishes in 30 minutes so we'll see what happens.

Good luck aus... if it's what you really want, I hope you win. :)

Won it!!! Just have to drive down to Sydney and pick it up this week sometime.

DJ,

I have easy access to that many quality basses from 4 to 6 string, from Fender, G&L, Warwick, Kubiki, etc, etc., that we can borrow from friends that it would be silly for my son to have "over spent". We just needed a reasonable bass that is here all the time so this should do just fine.;)

Good score Aus - have a nice trip to the big smoke to pick it up!

I'm still using an old Schecter bass I got about 15 years ago - you'll have noticed I'm not a "real" bass player! :p
