Like i said i new to this, so could you explane RCA conectors are they like jacks or compleatly diffrent thanks

so what type of lead will i need to connect mirophones to this soundcards thanks

Well RCA is same as on your TV or VCR or DVD, where you have Left, Right and Video connections, those are RCA....

I think you would need some type of preamp to connect a mic to this interface, stand alone pre or mixer would do... well actualy what do you mean by "lead" ... "plug"? ... like end of a cable?

what i would like to do is plug mics into the diffrent channle what type of leads can i get to do this iv just been browsing the web and iv seen adapters that concert jack to these RAC, so is one way to connect a mic with an female - jack lead with one of these adapters on the end thanks

well ... usualy computer interfaces that are made to connect mics to directly are made with XLR inputs and preamps built in.
So you COULD connect your mic directly to this box but it wouldn't work because you need to amplify the signal that comes from the mic before you send it to this box.... that's why you need a preamp of some type...

I read the manual a little for this box and they do say something about ajusting input gain and being able to skip the mixer but I don't think it's intended for microphones.

ok thanks ill keep browsing to see what i can find you dont of and soundcards in this price range that will cope with what im lloking for do you thanks

Maybe you should post what you are trying to do, your budget, and gear you have already and you might get better suggestions....

you could get that card and then get the behringer 8 channel pre amp for another $150. That would give you 8 channels of microphone in.

Actually...you can record with just an adapter that will convert the XLR to RCA. I have the Terratec EWS88/MT which is the earlier version of the phase 88...they look identical other than a few color differances. I actually get a pretty stong signal to the card without a preamp. there are no built in pre's but the ins are switchable from +4dBu to -10dBv and there are also gain controls built into the software control panel. When I first got the card, i actually recorded with out pre's. A demo that i recorded for a local band was done without pre's and a song from the demo got played on a local "unsigned band" radio program. Im not going to say i would continue recording without pre's now that i know better...but it will work and i did get a nice strong signal.

I have been planning to double mic something, (an amp or drum or something) with identical mics. One with a pre, and one directly into the card and see if folks here can tell a differance...i will get on that in the next day or so and you guys can compare.
