I am going to be recording a somewhat dynamic singer this weekend. I will be using a KSM37 into a Grace Model 101. I was thinking that I might have to through a comp in while tracking to control some of his peaks when he screams. Seeing that I have never tracked with a comp I am looking for some ball park figures. I was thinkg that I was going to have to have a little a shorter attack with longer release, and a samll ratio. Any suggestion would hel.

Thanks

Chad

If you're just trying to control peaks, then you'll want to do more of a very high-ratio / very fast attack / medium release kinda' deal. And set the threshold high. You don't want to be hitting it all the time; it's just there to tame the peaks.

What do you consider a High Ratio (5:1)? Attack (15-20ms)? Medium release (10-15ms)?

If it's to catch peaks, then you want it to be set up more like a limiter, so I'd say 10:1 ratio or more. Attack more like 5-10 ms or less ... however fast it has to be not to clip, really. Medium release for vox might be more like 100 ms or so. Most of this stuff depends on what kind of comp you're using, by the way.
