Since I upgraded from XP to Win 10 and installed Reaper with an interface to kick off my bedroom studio venture at my previous residence, I've recently moved up to a new Win 11 system and, though I've got some fairly good monitors, I've had the itch to add some stereo speakers for checking mixes and general music listening.
I've been shopping around but prices are more than I want to spend. Then I thought "Why not pull those old satellite speakers out of storage and hook them in?". Well, I dug them out and dusted them off - looking good. All cables there in good shape.
The old XP had a 3.5mm port on the rear panel, which is all that's required to get stereo audio - probably just another headphone out. My new MINI desktop has a single 3.5mm on the front only - labeled Headphone. I connected the single 3.5mm to that front port, plugged everything in and VIOLA! All LEDs lit up and all speakers worked fine when I played an .mp3.
The satellite speakers can be positioned well enough, Left/Right with a generous amount of cable between them, but the 3.5mm/3.5mm cable to the sub is a couple feet short of where I need it to be. I could reposition my MINI desktop but I like it where it is, so I'm ordering a longer 3.5mm cable, with a 90-degree on one end so it doesn't stick out too far from the MINI PC.
This speaker kit is a Harman/Kardon HK395 - 4Ω 30W setup. The sub provides plenty of bass and it's got separate Treble and Woofer volume controls on the front to get it dialed in just right for whomever is listening.
