8 trk alesis adat if new, how many hours do you get before you have to replace the heads, and if you bought a second hand on e is that a risky buisness.i dont even know if i want one yet, but i want to upgrade on my yamaha md8 for rehersal recording of the band. now that i've written this there are a foe more questions i would like awnsered, but i will see how this thread goes first.Rock on....

I bought my machines new and I'm not even sure how many hours are on the heads but suffice it to say there are THOUSANDS of hours on them. They've been taken good care of, lots of cleaning, only using quality tapes (Quantigy), and they rarely ever let me down (I've had a couple of tapes get munched but that was extremely rare). How many hours is too much? I suppose that would depend on how the person that owned them took care of them.

Thanks for the information. I was wondering because iv'e seen a few ads now with home use only.new heads fitted.

I also should have looked at a few other threads first. how do you tell how many hours an adat has been used ? is there a button thingy to tell you.

excellent

Thanks for the info.if you were going to purchase an adat which brand/model would it be ?

Either LX-20 (the little brother) or an XT-20. These are 20 bit, type II machines (the most recent vintage).

okay i'm getting exited now. I have a alesis 32 desk, if possible what would i need to sync 2 adats together, do i have to get a computer involved. i like computers but im trying to keep one our of our rehersal room.{recordIng 7 tracks.vox,bass,rythym,lead,kik,2 overheads, all live.

all you need is a 9pin sync cable. most adats should come with one, even if they are used. you go from the out of one of the machines to the in of the other and they will automatically configure themselves to be slave and master. use the master to run all your transport controls and the slave will follow.

that is correct, but i would go to your local music dealer to purchase already formatted ADAT tapes rather than formatting a S-VHS tape. this puts an extra pass on your heads that you didnt really have to. i would highly recomend the brand quantegy. these guys are also recomended by alesis.

I would only buy the specific ADAT-formulation tapes as opposed to off-the-shelf S-VHS tapes. The tape formulation is slightly different.

And the pre-forms are a great idea...

Would you consider adat old technology or are parts avaialable for some time yet.im considering syncing two adats together.I would hate to not be able to get repairs made to them.I dont know anyone who uses them are they still popular ??

That may become a concern in 10 years, but not right now.... there are a lot of ADATs out there...

hmm, must check out some prices of new/2nd hand adats. it would be a nice upgrade on my yamaha md8 .at least then i can use a desk wirh some better preamps etc, and still have the opportunity to buy some different outboard gear later to use compared to the yamaha aw16g iv'e been looking at. specs look good though but wish it had direct outs..thanks everybody for the info.im not worthy...
