Hey everyone--

I'm getting ready to do some demo work for my band, we've been in a few studios and recorded a few times and it seems like we hear opportunities in the songs AFTER we record them. What I'm trying to set up is a decent high-quality demo studio in our practice area. I have all the necessary mics, mixers, all the front-end gear (pre's, verbs--I'm a live sound guy as well) and would like to try recording to ADAT. Now my basic questions are as follows:

ADAT=8 tracks. How flexible is it really as far as "bouncing" to get more tracks? Or can all 8 tracks be synced and recorded to hd, and then more tracks added with protools or similar digital multitrack?

Control it via PC or get the remote?

Preferred methods of I/O to the PC--I plan on doing either all the mixing, effects, and mastering or at least the mastering in my PC (I have mad plugins like the WAVES L2, etc.) and what do you recommend for getting the tracks/mix into the PC? Does ADAT|Edit sum up all of these functions or is there an aftermarket I/O or D/A set up to make it "better?"

I appreciate the input. Basically the less I can tweak, the better... I over-engineer when faced with too many knobs and choices. I need to get "bang for the buck" and be able to output a clean demo or ep-quality disc.

Thanks in advance!

So many option, so little time...

If your headed to pc land anyway, do you need the adat? It is handy and simple ect. (good things).
Sorry, got to go...

Would love to go all-pc but can't deal with latency. Hate it. Would like to keep all the effects/mixing/tracks outboard and realtime with the PC used to capture the mix and then master. I have really bad luck with PC based stuff anyway, so I prefer to keep it out till the last second... Although using the PC to control the ADAT would be interesting.

Ok. So you want to do some submixing and bounce down to a few of the open tracks, or get more than eight by going into the pc?
You can do either with a mixer so latency it's much of an issue.

Adat Edit card

If you have one of these it could help, although RME and Frontier make interfaces as well.

I use my ADAT as a a/d converter and track right into Samplitude.
I have been very happy w/ that set up.

I think you can find the ADAT Edit cards for under $200 used. Although lots of people have complained about them, I have had pretty good luck w/ it.

Yeah I had the sme thing going on this is what I did(some of it may be obvious to you).

1)Made sure that the recording software and the ADAT are are at the same sample rate (they werent when I first tried this set up and, DUH!!, nothing worked, go figure)

2) Set the ADAT Clock to DIG, I believe this makes the ADAT the slave.

3)set your inputs on your software like this

ADAT input 1 L > input 2 R
input 3 L > input 4 R
and so on.

I use Samplitude to track it works very well for me. I hope this helped.
