ADAT interface

I have a quick question.

I am using Blackface ADATs with a Tascam console. Currently I'm interfacing them with the analog ins/outs. I'm wondering if you fine folks have an opinion on whether or not I would get better sound and signal/noise by using the digital multi-pin ins and outs. Thanks for the input!

Certainly less noise, but the digital I/O won't help a bit unless you're using a digital mixer.

I'm confused here... digital multipins!?! Are you talking about the board or the ADAT?

On the blackface ADATs the multipin (elco) connector is actually the +4 analog ins and outs... while the 1/4 inch connections are the -10 ins and outs.

The only digital interface on the blackface is the lightpipe which is not a multipin connector.

I'm assuming that you are using the 1/4 inch ins and outs on the back of the ADAT right now?

I'm referring to the 1"x2" grey connector marked "+4db analog" on the rear panel.

I am using the -10db 1'4'' connectors right now. I am also wondering if the difference in signal/noise will be worth the expense. I understand these snakes aren't cheap!

ahh... you said "digital multipins" so I was confused.

in order to use the +4 connectors (the elco connectors) your board has to be able to put out a +4 signal, otherwise you won't really help yourself any.

But... if your board can do +4, it is probably worth the expense to get the cables.

It's a Tascam M-2524 mixer. I do not have a manual for it, so to be honest I'm not sure if it does +4db or not!!

I more concerned with signal/noise than anything else. Even at -10db, I have no problem with signal level. I just want the cleanest and quietest signal I can get.

Well the cleanest signal path (non-digital) that you have available would be the +4 connections... but you would need to know if your board can handle it.

Otherwise you will overload tape returns etc and wind up with distortion in your playback and your "to tape" level won't be as hot (since you are mismatched at -10/+4).

I would see if you can locate a manual and find out... If I remember right the older Tascam boards were only capable of -10, but I'm not sure about your particular model.

I will contact Tascam and look into it. In the mean time, thank you for the input. Everyone's posts are very much appreciated!
