One other option is the Benchmark Media DAC1 (DA). It is gaining favorable remarks.

You could always sink a couple grand in to a Lynx Two sound card, and get A/D conversion in the same league as the Lucid, only you'd be getting about 6 channels of it.

From Mastering ngineers no less, which has to tell you something about the quality. Its under $800 list and from what I heard...stomps all the competitors well into $1500 to $2000 price range.

Another option in the $500 or so Range is the RME cards. Lots of the smaller Mastering houses have been using the RME cards with great reviews.

Don't count out the all in one boxes converters though. I do agree the Rolands are pretty low end, but the ones in the Yamaha AW4416 have been stunning some of the ME's who have been getting mixes done on that unit.

I would be more concerned with a decent clock if oyur doing alot of DA transfers, lowest jitter your budget can stand. A crappy consumer DAC without a tight clock is like asking for phase shift. Another option is the digi 001, pretty decent converters and fairly stable. Did you know that 9 out 10 ME's prefer the sound of Digi 001 LE over TDM. Math matters..Bits Matter.. digital gain structuring does matter.

Guys, the Delta 1010, the LynxTwo, an RME card, all computer-based DAW PCI card interfaces... The Rosetta? The Benchmark DAC-1? He asked about a 2-ch. A/D converter for his 1680 in the $500 range...

Being that the A/D 9624 is an excellent converter and is as close as you're gonna get to $500 for an excellent A/D, I suggested that one. And I mentioned the clock as something to get when he had the extra money. I admit though, the clock is questionable on how effective it will be with his particular setup, in relation to the extra cost.

Just putting this thread back into perspective...

Hey I started out wanting a ART DI/O ($100- $150) and ended up counting my chickens for a APOGEE ROSETTA (1000+ eggs that never hatched)... Fact is I just didn't know what a better, more expensive convertor would do for me (still kinda fuzzy) but I'm glad I got the info. Even though I can't afford the APOGEE I don't think i'll get the DI/O now that I know some things. In fact I might jump for a LUCID if the oppertunity shows. Thanks for mentioning it.

Never hurts to know what's out there...

And I thought about coping a MOTU 896 at one point to use as my convertor as well as my soundcard...

Thank you Recording Engineer.....

I love it on the mic section when people ask for a $100-200 mic and people toss out $1500 B.L.U.E. mics. Matched set I might add. So......$3000.

I would consider the clock down the road as my grand scheme involves ProTools. Just not anytime soon. ...Mixers, mics, cables out the ying yang.......
