Active pickups?

There might be enough room in the pickup cavity to mount the battery without extra routing.If not,time to get out the dremmel tool.

Questions from a newb here:

I'm thinking of getting an Ibanez ART120 guitar. I see that it has active pickups, and needs to have battaries in place. Are these going to have to be replaced often? Is this something I'm going to be able to easily do myself? Can anybody think of a reason to avoid a guitar with active pickups?

Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm just a newb player that's ready to move from his $100 guitar up to a $300 - $400 one.

They should give you a long time between changes. It depends a lot on the system, and of course the more that is going on in there the more often it will need the batteries changed, but if you play an average amount, and you remember to unplug it when you are not playing it (pluging it in turns it on!!), most guys get about a year out of a battery.

Oh, and if you can get your hands on a 18 volt or ±9 volt system, do it - they have a lot more headroom and sound much better to my ear. Of course, my own guitars are all passives, but still....

With EMG's, you need to replace the volume and tone pots as well. You can buy the whole kit that comes with the wiring diagram. Most people put the battery in the control cavity, not the pickup cavity.
