I just bought a laptop and I'm now a mobile producer. I'm looking for a small pair of active monitors to travel with. I was leaning toward the KRK RP 5. Are they very heavy? Small? Any other options?

I have a pair of rp5s they are pretty heavy I wouldn't want to lug them around. They are not very tall or wide but they are deep. If I was you I would get some good headphones and do final mixing back at your studio or where ever you have your monitors.

I also specialize in mobile recording and if I'm not using headphones, I'll take along a pair of Roland micro monitors. You wouldn't want to mix a full project on these probably, but they do a great job getting you close until you get home on a decent set of monitors. I don't think they make them anymore, but Edirol (owned by Roland) puts out two different sets of micro monitors. The larger of the two can be found here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...eo-Micro-Monitor-Pair?sku=603678&src=3SOSWXXA

and the smaller here:

For mobile monitors I think that's about as small as you will find at a decent price with decent performance. Good luck on your hunt!

I have a set of the Edirol MA-10. They are a size between the 2 posted above. I only use them to plug for my mp3 player. I never tried mixing on them.
I think the could be usable for monitoring but would not mix on them.

Make sure you listen to the krks before you buy them. I tested the rokit 5s and they sound very anemic if you're mixing anything with bass in it. The 6s are far better in that respect and also have a flatter response, but they're too big to take with you. As long as you're seriously mixing anything you could use some good headphones, but for monitoring there are a lot of optons that are the same size or smaller than the rokit 5s (maybe even check out the krk v2-series), but they are much more expensive. The RP5s have a pretty clean sound overal but you can't use them if you're mixing certain types of music.
