Hi,
i am in need of something to play music from my pc with... i have used several of my friend "pc speakers" and i have found them to be absolutely awful. I sometimes use my pc as a home recording studio and was wondering whether it would be better to get a standard hifi amp and bookshelf speakers or to get some active monitors. Sadly my budget is about £140.. i have been looking at the Edirol MA-10D (£99) and the Edirol MA-20D (135) in the active speaker idea... as my general impression that going that way would be best to get good quality sound.
does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks, Colm

They're your ears so you should take your favorite cd to a music store, play it on all your options and choose for yourself.

Thanks morning star. I was talking to this guy in a music shop today and he said that studio monitors provide all frequencies equally so playing music through them will sound shockingly bad..... but im not convinced as arent all speakers made to replicate the sound perfectly... so there shouldnt be a difference?!?!
well does anyone know because the guy in this shop seemed a bit of a twat to be honest...

That's a load of crap! He doesn't know what the hell he's talking about!

One of the first things I did when I got my Wharfedales was to play the song "Scarecrow People" by XTC through them - sounded awesome!

So Studio Monitors all the way then? Also have you any suggestions for nice active monitors under £140?

Alot of places in the US are blowing out the M-Audio BX5 monitors because the BX5a is being released. They are currently <$200 for a new pair here (previously about $300). Look around to see if you can get a pair in your pricerange (new or used). If you do a lot of gaming or multimedia, you may want to add a sub at some point. The Wharfedales are popular (Diamond Pro 8.2 actives) but a little out of your pricerange.

I have read nothing but poor to mediocre reviews of the Edirols for monitoring.

Not sure what computer speakers you've tried, but I have the Logitech Z-2300 (about $100 us) and like them for music/movies on my computer, but they do lack the detail needed for monitoring properly.

The guy in the music shop is FOS. I still say you should let your ears be the guide to choosing what you can afford.
