Acoustic treatment, used by all pros?

I noticed that most clips that i find of pro's "studio live" recordings are performed in untreated rooms. at least not as treated as i know treatment should be (foam/rockwool/fiberglass boards on the walls, bass traps and etc..).

look at this clip for example, i don't see any treatment, and to me, it sounds terrific.

i'm planning on doing some acoustic treatment in my room (both recording and mixing room), and when i thought of all those clips, i was thinking that maybe there is another approach i might not know of. maybe you guys can clarify those stuff for me.

by the way, do you think they are really recording with all of these mics? there is something like 4 mics there..

First off, are your rooms that large? The SM7 being used for his vocals is a dynamic mic. It does not pick up so much room like a condenser would. There are also no high volume instruments, with a bunch of low end bouncing around, being recorded here, nor is the control room here. A recording room would be treated differently that a control room. Sometimes for a recording room, this openness is a good thing. I probably would not mic a bass cabinet in there without a bunch of bass traps. Not room mics anyway.

I would not be surprised if the somng was recorded using portable acoustic treatment - gobos - and then Eddie Vedder played the song again a couple of times to allow the two cameras to shoot the video from a few different angles, obviously without the gobos so that you can see him. His voice tells that it was recorded in that room. As jimmys69 says, with low volumes and the SM7 mic, a reasonable sound was more plausible. It will have been mixed and mastered professionally.

Are you guys even sure this is really the place that song was recorded and not just used for the video?

Can never be sure though the performance did not sound as if it were doctored so I would doubt it wasn't.

Sure i thought of that before asking.. but its not the first video i see with rooms like this, i guess sometimes they just want that kind of sound.. which is good IMO.

I still have big doubts. Suits and such aren't afraid to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

*disclaimer - I didn't actually watch or listen to the video. So my opinion is somewhat unbiased in this regard.

And who's to say that youtube video's audio is just the camera microphone.

In many facilities the treatment is behind fabric walls. You're not supposed to see it.

I dont know, I thought it sounded pretty "live" (as opposed to dead). It is possible to have a good sounding room without tons of treatment. Rooms like this are just not usually found in houses like ours though.

I don't know what you're living in but my house is acoustically perfect!
