i havent done much acoustic. a co worker of mine used a pair of Røde NT5's and got some excellent results.

i have used an Oktava MK319 on EVERYTHING and gotten a decent sound (except as a drum overhead..) but thats an LDC.

if i had to go buy something, i would buy a pair of SM81's i think.

most people dont like it, but my boss uses AKG C1000's for just about everything and it sounds great. he says people dont use them right (??) and thats why they dont like them. i dont know, i've never used them though.

yesh, what kind of acoustic is it? interested..

Audio Technica Pro 37

Hi,

My latest favorite SDC is the AT Pro 37 and AT Pro 37R. These are the same mic, I think, The R version is earlier. The Pro 37 is their current product.

They currently go for about $130 each. On ebay used they are rare but under $100.

Good for both acoustic guitar and drum overheads. Probably good for a bunch of other stuff too.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

ps, i like how you delete your post.

Have you ever posted something and thought better of it? I did because I did some name calling and regreted it.

I’m looking for a small diaphragm condenser microphone (maybe a set) to record acoustic guitar. I would also like to use them as overheads mikes when recording a drum kit. The price range would around $300 - $400 per mike, but any suggestion would be welcome, especially if it is less expensive.

Peluso CECM6 with either a cardioid or hypercardioid capsules.

AT 4051

Neumann KM184 (used)

Surprised no one has mentioned the MXL 603 or 604. Sounds an awful lot like a Neumann KM184 on guitar. Decent drum overhead too.

Josephson C-42s work pretty good for me, usually. That's right within your budget. Nice mics...

Though sometimes it's a sm-7, and sometimes a U-195, or an At-4033. Use the Josephsons most often though.

I love my SM81; if you can afford a pair, they are good workhorse mics.

Cheaper, but almost as good, in my opinion, would be a pair of the MXL 603s. I did a mic comparison on my Martin and the MXL 603s came in a close 2nd to the SM81. The KSM 109 I tried was kind of brassy compared to the other two.

FYI - I just got a pair of the MSH-1c mics today and I have to say I am kind of disappointed. I set them up in X/Y on the acoustic with my RNP for the preamp and I gave up that idea really quickly. Maybe they'll sound better on overheads. I am better off with a mono SM81 than these mics in stereo. I can't complain about the price, but I am not sure what I am going to use them for now.......

I've tried to be clear about this; the 1Cs are too dark for acoustic guitar, overheads, etc., and too noisy for quiet sources. They aren't 1Os with rear rejection. They are intended for loud sources like toms, snare, guitar amps, maybe even kick, etc. They have a response curve more like a dynamic mic.

that is a good reason to avoid them! :D

Actually, the most recent projects I've been associated have all chosen the Shure SM7 for guitars, even though Neumann, Josephson, Beyer and AT SDs have been available. It's been Americana/rock type stuff. Go figure.

Sorry, missed that part somehow. I'll try them out on a guitar cab or on snare and tom.

I sure enjoy using a Sennheiser e614 to record my Martin DM. Nice, rich and detailed without detectable self noise. If money were less of an issued I'd go for the e914, the big brother to it. The 614 was only $199.99

why don't you listen to recordings and then find out what you like

theres an idea....just kidding to many harsh people on this site

I know you're joking, but not sure what the joke is. IMO the km184 sounds freakin great on acoustic. What am I missing here? I use sm81s cuz that's what I've got, but would go for the neumanns in a heartbeat and the MXLs are comparable if you can work with the wide pattern.

I have used these also. They can be very nice on acoustic.
