hey folks,

i just picked up a used pc with an athlon 700, >500mb ram, and a 20 gb ultra hd for a good deal. id like to run acid and sound forge on it. i've read of some athlon conflicts. anyone know of any conflicts with sonic foundry products and athlon?

also, any suggestions for an i/o box or card? i'd like 8 balanced i/o's. obviously, needs to be cool with sonic foundry.

thanks!

I have an Athlon 550, 256 Mb SD RAM, 20 Gig H/D partitioned with all my apps on C and audio on D (save all projects to CD), Delta Audiphile 2496 and Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI. Win 38 SE

Sound Forge, Vegas. Cakewalk 9.01 run flawlessly.

This machine is also an internet PC IE 6 Netscape 6.2 and 4.72 plus about 100 other apps for imagery, office, etc.

By todays standards I know it's small but I do almost all the maintenance on my family and friends PCs and am constantly amazed at the superior performance of this Athlon.

You have a fine machine there and with proper setup and maintenance should be quite happy with it especially concidering the bargain aspect. You will find yourself limited in the multiple input recording area, so you may want to concider the Audiphile instead. It has the same audio qualities as the 1010 but only 2 audio ins and 2 SPDIFs plus MIDI in and out. I have a Mackie 1604 (16 channels) connected to the Audiophile 1/2 ins for routing my external audio. I record 1 audio track at a time and don't find this too limiting. After all to record a band all at once through muliple inputs you would need sound proof rooms and monitors for each anyway.

thanks!

thanks guys!

my only reason for wanting 8 i/o's is more for mixing than recording. i have a nice, vintage ward beck console that i love mixing thru. my thought was i could mult everything into 8 tracks within the pc and mix thru my console. this way, i could still use all my outboard effects and such. i can't see recording 8 tracks simultaneously, but i do record 3 tracks simu quite a bit. as in 2 mics on a guitar or keyboard and vox. but i guess i could always track multiples to my (gasp!) adat (at least it's an xt20 :-) and pull them into the pc via my lightpipe. but my worry with that is synching that to acid. i've been doing this in reverse for awhile. i would write my rythmn tracks in acid on my laptop, and then dump them to my adat and then simply add the other parts while playing along with the acid part recorded on the adat. can i do this in revers somehow?

i'll start looking into the hardware suggested. i did download sound forge and have played around a bit with it an acid 3.0 on the athlon and it kills! btw, this pc already had a soundblaster live card installed, which certainly works but sounds funky to my ears.

thanks again!
