well i think we all know what im on about... Is it just me , do i need to eq things better ..?? Im stereo mic using two shure 16A condenser mics.. i sometimes use a rode nt1 for a warmer feel but ive been trying the stereo thing. Its just sometimes the two channels will sound like mud together , seperate they sound great.. is this a weird sounding thing... anyhelp much appreciated ,
cheers all

sounds like phase to me. If your stereo mikes are out of phase they will cancel when joined in mono. Plug both mikes into your console and speak into both together. on playback you should sound like you are in a phantom speaker in the middle - if you don't your mikes are out of phase (or your speakers are out of phase). To fix your mikes you need to reverse pins 2 and 3 (cannon) on one mike only.
cheers

If you have a pre-amp with a phase buttons, push one in, that would even be an easier way to check it. The ART MP tube pre-amps have this feature.

enjoy...

Nice web site for the basic acoustic recording information. Choice of mics and
their techniques are readily available.
However, these just don't cut the mustard alone. I've been down the many microphone and techniques road - please, no more frustration. I could fill my bathtub with all these past microphone experiences. Talk outside the microphone arena and I'm with you.

still searching to the sound...

hey cheers all.... if i am having phase problems will be it rediculously noticeable.. cos it doesnt sound that bad.. Ive tried panning each channel to its respective area, it sounds quite good , then i try only a quarter and it sounds a little better , then dead center for both and thats were it sounds a little muddy.. When i say muddy , its not horrible or anything , just the odd note seems to have no clarrity in the mix. Ive heard people talk about "this is what masterings for" , or should this be cleared up more on my end?? maybe i need a nice eq , im using the eqs of the behringer 2642A ... has sweepable mids , so i spose its ok for some things.. whats everyone elses oppinion on this? is eq a huge part to clear up muddiness , or should we all start with a sweet sounding instrument to start with (not always possible though)... anyway , thanks all ...

Ha Spider,

You said that you panned your guitar tracks to the center ? Have you tried the 3 & 9 oclock position? How about double tracking, instead of stereo micing for a fatter and warmer
sound? There are also thicking effects in Alesis equipment too. My microverb has two thickeners under fx.

with you in the acoustic search....
