about to build a small studio in my house and really want some input

Hello,

I am about to start work on a small studio space in the upstairs of my house. I plan on using it for mac based production using logic or pro tools (not decided yet) plus I aim to build up a collection of synths & additional processing hardware over the next few years.

My first dilemma is how to convert the room into a studio friendly space. below is a layout of the room and the dimensions are 12 ft 2,1/2 inches by 7 ft 11,1/4 inches, plus the ceiling slopes down to the left. At the end is a large window.

I am unsure which would be the best way to set up my studio. Is it better to have the studio running side ways with the computer & monitors at the window end? or would it be better to run it length ways with the computer & monitors in the centre of the room?

Any help on this would be really helpful & much appreciated,

Hi jonnydub and welcome to the forum.

It is better to have your monitors facing down the length of the room. If you do you will need better advice than I can give on how to acoustically treat the space to cope with the sloping ceiling as the room will not be symmetrical.

Yes you will want to be centrally placed so that the room is symmetrical.

If you face a side wall, face the short one and add plenty of trapping to the rear wall.

Before you work on the layout of the room and acoustic treatment you need to consider how much isolation you need, ie. how much soundproofing you need to avoid your music leaking out and irritating others, and how much noise enters the room and would corrupt your recordings or disturb you while mixing.
