Never meant for this damn thing to get to this point. All I wanted to do was multitrack, and what did I do. Logged on here

I'll second that!:D

I for one am enjoying the story you are telling. I realize that it's got to suck. I bought a house in March and while it was relatively a painless process (compared to yours) I understand the stress the whole deal involves.

One person's pain is anothers entertainment. I for one appreciate the trouble you go to, to post your process. Between you and Frederic I'm learning a lot about the crappy parts of remodeling/ studio building.

I also second everything DDEV said.

"Haven't touched the guitar in 3 months" -

Ditto - picked up my classical AE cutaway last nite for the first time in several months, almost forgot which end goes in your mouth...

I've needed a daily fix of "real Life" ever since Mixerman's "Bitch Slap" chronicle died over at PSW.

Hehehehehehehe! Thats cool and I appreciate the support. Man, I don't mean to make this shit sound so bad. I'ts not really, I mean life is life, and if you've got good health, a good wife, and a roof over your head your ahead of the game. So take my bitchin and moanin with a grain of salt. It's just a story to illustrate the crappy side of following a dream. Wait till I get to the good side:D :D
As far as bitch slap is concerned, who gives a fuck. Sounds like a good story but I can only put up with primadonna musicians for so long. THEY should get a life. Hey, they can come over and help with my roof!!! Pay aint great but my wife is a hell of a cook!!
I don't pretend that this story is as good as Mixermans. HIS is much more interesting. But to tell you the truth, every time I log on over there and read mixermans forum, those snotnosed so called engineers who post, prove to me time and tiime again that if thats what that vocation is filled with, they can stuff it. What a bunch of know it all pricks. Who the fuck do they think they are anyway. If the REAL pro's of "engineering", I mean REAL engineers like Michael spouted off that way in public, I think their peers would verbally reprimand and professionally REAM them.
So I don't take much stock in their "profession" cause it sounds like a bunch of moronic jerks to me. Funny, but as professionals, give me a break! AND, by the way, when did they have to take a professions licence test anyway. Engineer is not the correct term if you ask me. ANYBODY can turn knobs, right or wrong. It doesn't take a license to do that. And the way things are looking, they may well consider advancement to Sanitary Engineer. They might get more work. Well, my .02 on that subject.
(ps, this doesn't mean I don't respect the capabilitys of pro audio engineers. Just the people who think they are an engineer just because thier ears are golden. All artists have talent. The law doesn't give a shit about talent, and REAL engineers have to answer to the law.)

Hahahahahahahaha!! Steve you crack me up!!! Hey, wait a minute:eek: no wonder my thinking was off! Mouth huh! Has it been that long?:D Oh, I just realized Steve, I thought you were a keyboard player. So you play guitar too huh? Cool. I'll get back to you on that one.

Fitz,

I agree with you about the quality of the postings over at PSW. Every once in awhile something useful can be found, but it is so rare I hardly ever visit there any more (OK, I just came from there but it's been weeks since my last visit; all that flaming tends to burn the meat, if you catch my drift). I learn much more here and over at John's site to what is relevant to me (ie. grass roots recording, budget gear, and studio construction/acoustics).

And I thoroughly enjoy all the posts be those going through the processes of studio construction. Hopefully someday when I move out of my 8x8 "womb" I'll have learned enough from you all to avoid your mistakes (I'm sure I'll find my own to make, thank you very much).

"Steve, I thought you were a keyboard player. So you play guitar too huh? Cool. I'll get back to you on that one." -

Things I (sorta) play -
Keys (age 5) Guitar (age 19) Bass (age 31) Drums (age 32) Trombone (age 13) Baritone (age 15) Tuba (age 16) Radio (when I can stand the programming)

I'm also getting much better at playing dead, but I'm tryin' to put off "expert status" on that one for a while - 58 is 'way too young to take up "harp", unless it's made by Hohner... Steve

  Holy moly, I'm lucky just to grasp guitar a bit. That long, huh? I started picking up a guitar when I was sixteen. Played many years pro, but many years semi retired:D Ha! whatever that means!

Well, I wish I could say it's beer thirty. But I quit drinking 3 years, 5 months, 3 weeks 4 days 2 hours and 16 minutes ago. Man would I love a cold beer, but
nooooooooooooooooooooo!!! My grapefruit juice and Mountain Dew serves me fine. Like Hank Jr. says, "I drink it by the gallon" Its what I used to quit alcohol. Amongst others.

Time to get off the roof, which I didn't finish as planned. The knees are worse than my playing fingers. I remembered my vehicle permit was expiring today, so had to go to DMV. Now let me tell you something. What a breeze. In California, I had to go to the smog check 7 times on my ole 79 Chevy stepside 350. Never did get it smogged cause of one thing or other that cost mucho bucks. Runs perfect. No smog certificate, no registration. They just raised the frigging fees THREE TIMES what they were last year. ($210 + smog + fixing=no drive) :p
Adios mofo's. The fee to register it here in Oregon is $30 plus another $30 for a plate. And thats for 2 frigging years. YEA!
But I gotta say, going to DMV here in Coos Bay can be a real interesting place to catch an eyefull of the locals. Today was no exception. As I pulled into the parking lot
a gal was climbing down a ladder on a 4 wheel drive, that had to of been 5' off the ground. It was about a '90 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL 4 door. Now thats 4 wheelin in style!:D Unfucking believable. Only in Oregon.
When I stayed in a motel over in North Bend, on Sat. nights, I was amused by the quantity of 4 wheel drive trucks barreling through town (Hiway 101) at 50 mph, filled with whooping and hollering young guys, who sounded like cowboys who've been out on the range for 40 days and hadn't seen a woman in 6 months. Funny. Different world over here.
Actually, this roof is more time consuming than anticipated. And so is the silicone consumption. Remember, this is a temporary fix, but 22 tubes is NOT CHEAP. Ha!
Money dump. Oh well! I'll do it right next year.
Well gents, not much else to report on the saga front. Tonight I'll get my email/host crap configured hopefully and start punching in the numbers to CAD. This house is really structurally sound, but a lot stuff is hidden, and the only way to make sence of it is to draw it to scale and overlay the two floors, slabs, roofs, beams etc untill I see what lines up with what. Like for instance, half the room I'm in now, which will temporarily house my studio gear, is suspended over a porch. Its on the second floor. The floor joists are covered below by a vinyl soffit covering, which at the end of the room are supported by a 6x8 beam. The joists then cantelever past the beam for 3 ft, which provides joists for a deck, outside of a sliding glass door at the end of the studio.
Now since I can remove the vinyl soffet, it dawned on me, since my console legs die into the floor as cable chases, I can access the cables from underneith, to feed them along the joists, to the transport rack at the rear of the room. Perfect. OK, I'm done rambling. Got no one else to talk to but my wife and she doesn't want to hear this shit, so I guess that leaves you guys to talk to.

Damn, and I thought I had a bad day because Uncle Sam (my boss) has totally screwed my pay up again. Bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me guess, DFAS in Pensacola.

Same story.

So how goes the roof?

My sister lives up that way... folks don't tan, they rust! Lots and Lots of rain. The good news is that if you have good isolation, lots of indoor time for recording!

Folks up your way do EVERYTHING in the rain - walk their dogs, go shopping, etc. Took a little getting used to for a so cal guy like me. The funniest thing I saw was a guy washing his car in the rain! Probably just needed to get the mud off, but man, it looked funny!

-lee-

Hey Lee - we wash our cars in the rain up here because most of our wind/weather comes in from the SOUTH - wouldn't want any of that SoCal acid rain messin' up the chrome...:=)
