A Stupid Song

Yo 3m- Good song-your usual good arrangement and performances-it looks like alot of mix comments have been passed on-not sure what I can add-but I'll try...The opening guitar could use some high end--it starts the song in a kind of lo-fi way...As someone else said-an acoustic mixed with that electric would add some clarity and sparkle....I like the single note riff, sounds good...I didn't care for the drum sounds-the high hat pattern especially seems overly busy...snare hmmm

A question, comment--Do you mix from the rhythym section up?? I find it good practice to start with the kick drum at "0" and work from there...(before I destroy the mix completely)

Anyway-sounds like you could expand the fidelity of the mix in both directions--some more bass-and some more high end to the guitars and drums/cymbals.

Vocals sound very good to me-nice harmonies and layering.

No no no,yeah yeah yeah....lol

"The melody sticks to your shoe and I've got the words all wrong ..."

Dude, I love this song! When I read the title of the thread I thought this was going to be a comedy number, but it is really a great song! It is very catchy and has that 60's folkish, Birds quality to it. I love the harmony, and the throw out to The Beatles at the end (yeah, yeah, yeah) is cool ...

I don't know if you have ever thought about taking a different approach to this (and this is kind of off the subject of how your thread is going so far), but have you ever thought about mixing this in a 60's fashion? Placing the vocals and guitars off to one channel and the drums and bass on another, giving it that strange stereo quality that many of the early 60's records had (I think they called it mock-stereo) ... I could totally picture this tune with that kind of mixing to it, even though it goes against all of the convential wisdom of what a mix should sound like nowadays ... :)

Anyway, other than that I don't have any mix advice (I wish I could help you with the low end stuff, but my monitors aren't good enough to pick out what needs to be done), but I truly think this is a killer song...

:)

Sorry for bumping this after it was almost off the board, but there are a couple of listeners I need to thank.

Strato - I'm glad you liked the song. I'm sure I could put some high end into the "main" guitar part. I'll tweak it around and see what it sounds like. I'm a sucky drum programmer. I'm sort of getting to the point where I enjoy doing it. So I'll maybe start spending more time on it. I also need to start paying attention to how others do it so I can get ideas. As for mixing - I start with a drum mix first. I think on this one I was obsessed with making it loud, I didn't pay attention to other things. That and my bass part had this horrible buzz (oddly, not when it was soloed however). Too many things to think of. Oh - and you got the "no no yeah yeah" thing at the end. I found it quite easy to keep with the stupid theme. That should tell everyone something. :)

boydrj - I appreciate the comments on the writing. I enjoy reading things like that. 60's mock stereo. hmmm. I'm going to mix this one again, I'll give the idea a spin.

Everyone - thanks. Trip.

Being a great fan of your song from the start of this thread (I play it like 2-3 times a day - no kidding), can I someday maybe have the pleasure to record some real drums on it? Your bassline is coming from Dutch grounds soon too :), and I just feel like this one asks for it.
Having a vintage Slingerland set from which the sounds would perfectly fit the feel of the song, I think it would be nice.

Well, actually it would be just great fun. Let me hear.

Hey, we're almost a band. The only thing we need to add is a bandwar...

I don't want to be on the same recording as F_cksia, I hate his guts

Too late you already sent me your part. :D

No smiley faces, but I'll assume you're joking.

TripleM, I can't PM you; your box appears to be full.

But I'll use the bassless version, no problem.

groovy

what a cheeky wee song. I always dig your vocals and nice harmony. Cheers

Thanks Erland. I appreciate the listen.

F_cksia - I cleared out my mailbox.

Pedullist - I tried PMing you and your mailbox is full.

See? most everybody agrees that this is one cool tune. I can hear it on tv. I didn't mean cartoons when I said nickelodeon earlier, just that it would fit on prime entertainment for all ages, and bet kids would love it.

I am really looking forward to this collab result. Real vintage drums and Peds bass is going take this tune to another level.

Did the drums today.. Some timing issues again but not enough time to fix, maybe I'll redo it this week. And besides, it's also quite contributing to the 60's feel of the song :).

I am also quite curious to hear the result.

Hmmm. That's weird. I got an email saying you tried to PM me. But there's nothing in my mailbox. I'll PM you with my email address so you can send me something there.
