A start to my first mix!

Thanks. I can reamp the bass easily. I was thinking about the neck pickup so I might just redo it.

The verse is on the neck however. I think I'll continue to look at the automation and the panning a little more, but do you think the mix is getting to the stage where I can think about compressing and Eqing?

Wow, the 2nd last one had a better guitar tone but the most recent is quieter & thinner again.
Is there a prob with your monitoring set up.?
The hand claps sound really fake to me - don't know why though.

Latest has the claps where they need to be. Good level, great sound. Drums come in nice, sound nice. Bass is well balanced. Didn't I hear a version with vocals...where did they go? One of your bass strings sounds out of tune. The heavy guitars come in hot, but it's grab-yer-attention hot, not bad hot. The end is still very abrupt like the guitar part was looped and just cut off.

The claps are fake, so I need to do them myself. I'll have a look at the bass, it may well be a bit out.

I do think it sounds a lot better, I'll keep on going over the automation and keep trying to improve the guitar tone.

I took the vocals out just so I could get be other stuff in sync. I should probably look at compression and EQ soon then right? Or is there something else?

A good first effort.

The handclaps sound fake/samply. If it were me, I'd record real claps.

Little pop at 1:20 and 2:15. But I think it's just part of the guitar track - not a digital pop.

I thought the clean guitar was too clean and the overdriven guitar was too overdriven. I'd like just a little breakup on that clean guitar. I'd also reduce some of the high midrange - it was a little abrasive.

Thanks!

Yea it's when I've muted the strings, it's a percussive effect that's kinda part of my style. In regards to the mid range, do you mean as in EQing the amp or EQ in post?

Sooo when should I be thinking about moving on to compressing and EQing?

do you mean as in EQing the amp or EQ in post?

Its best to do it at the amp as much as possible. If it were me, I'd add a little more gain to what you had and turn down the treble a notch or so.

But what about EQing in post? Cutting etc?

Check this out. I think it's much much better!

(Turn your monitors up! :D )

I hear you switched pickups. :D

Honestly, I think you'd benefit with just a tiny bit of distortion on the clean guitars. There's points in the verse where you hold out the notes, and your guitar could use some sustain. I feel like I'm telling you too much, though. You should also do what you think is best! :)

It's fine, it all puts ideas in my head. It makes me consider stuff that I wouldn't have before, and that I will consider next time.

Yea I changed pickups! I'll have a play with the verse. As far as I'm concerned this is a collaborative effort haha!

But what about EQing in post? Cutting etc?

When I said "turn down the treble" on the amp, I was talking about EQ. That's preferable to EQing the track. However, if you're going to EQ the track, I'm thinking that a notch cutout somewhere around 2400hz would be near where you'd want to cut.

I'll start to have a look into it. I think I'm nearly ready to start EQing and compressing now. So that's another journey to start!

Okay.

I've spent a fair amount of time automating, changing guitar tones, mixing levels, re recording guitars, getting my mate to redo the vocals etc.

I think I've got it to pretty much as good a level as I can with my knowledge. I'm pretty sure that the double track on the vocal might be loud in one ear so I need to look at that again, and before the loud bridge where the guitars cut out it kinda goes completely dead but I can't seem to fix that. We're also aware that his voice sounds a bit strained in a couple of places.

I haven't done any compression or EQing yet, this is just about levels.

Do the levels sound okay?
How's the guitar tone?
Does the drum panning sound okay?
Does the vocal double tracking sound okay?
I added reverb to the claps and vocals, is the level and effect okay?

And please comment on anything and everything else. :)

It is still mixed kinda low so please turn your monitors up!!!

Okay, now the guitars are too muddy! lol

Too much low end. Cut it a bit. Did you add that phaser effect on the clean guitar in post? It's a little much. I like the vocals! Though, I think I would like it doubled throughout the entire song rather than a few lines.

Thanks :).

You mean for the chorus? I haven't changed the verse or bridge guitars at all. I added the phaser to the distorted guitars on my Kemper and reamped, then added the reverb from my Big Sky and some tape saturation from my Strymon Deco, that might be why. I'll have a play and see. I was kinda wondering about the guitars anyway, something did seem a bit off.

Out of interest, are you familiar with the Kemper Profiling Amp? It's a great piece of kit,

Hey Phil.

I love the clean Strat sound and playing. There's a "Take me home" that occasionally comes out of the right speaker that was a little startling. It's a bit weird, and I think it's too loud compared to the other vocals. The guitar is a little bass-y, this is where you can try to a high-pass filter. Also, I find the guitar too loud and because of that, everything else, especially the drums, seems very distant.

Overall sounding good, though.
