Hello all, I had a question about recording voice that hopefully someone can help me out with. A friend and I are doing some recording and his voice ( a bit like a Kurt Cobain sound ) seems to get a little distorted on parts and I can't seem to get it out. I know once the recording goes in, if it's to loud not much is going to fix it, so i'm wondering what sort of settings might be better suited for this situation. I have 2 mics... a peavey 835 and a SM-58. I usually use the 835 as it seems to have a little better tone, i'm recording with audio studio 7. It just seems as if even the compressor doesn't compress the sound well enough. Any suggestions?

Is the compressor software or hardware? You need to keep the signal from clipping at the converter, so either lower the preamp gain, or consider getting a hardware compressor in the chain before the converter.

it's a software compressor.... i'm going into the computer through an aardvark direct pro 24/96. I have tried lowering the gain as it goes in, but then it doesn't seem loud enough... or if I turn it up after it's recorded, it's still distorting. I have considered getting a hardware compressor, but I figured i'd try this for a while just to see if I was doing something wrong.

also another quick question...... the is a frequency control on the aardvark software... what should that be set on for vocals?
