A problem with compression & vocals

W'sup guys!I have a problem with plugin compressors and vocals.I have never known to use them well.Attimes my vocals hit the red on Sonar,and I'd like to discipline them.I tried the timeworks compressor with a raio of 2:1&3:1.The end result was that the vocals lost some level of brightness & clarity.
The big question is,how do I get to achieve punchy and clear vocals?Am currently using a Marshall-MXL2001 mic,a peavey 1002 8mixer-direct into a soundblaster live.
I run Sonar 3,with the vintage warmer,and a couple of other plugins.Kindly help please?

Plug your mic into a mic pre--mic pre into your compressor--compressor into recording gear--set levels to get big sound and no clip--experiment and enjoy your vocals.

Al give it a try.I'm currently operating on a low budget.I'm thinking of getting the Behringer Mic100.Tell me what you think about it.I ain't sure about a compressor right now,is it possible to hook up the signal from the Pre- to the recording gear direct?They say it has a limiter,sowhat do you think?

You CAN hook up your mic pre out directly to your recorder--I've done that before I had a compressor--you can get some good stuff by experimenting.

Don't know about the mic you mentioned. Maybe the mic forum guys can better answer that. I use an AKG3000, A Shure KSM32, and I have a couple of others.

So low budget or go budget...you can still record and get some good results if you utilize your gear and know what it can do.
