My current fav is Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy... that guy amazes me... he can play in any time signature and his drums sound incredible. I read once where there are times he'll have five different sets in the studio and will bounce from one to the other during the same song! And he does a lot of double kick stuff... I LOVE double kick!

Yeah, that's mainly what he does. He's drummed for Pete Yorn, Abandoned Pools, Perry Farrell, Chris Cornell, Juliana Hatfield, Paul Westerberg, Shaun Mullins, etc...

Plus he's simultaneously in APC, Devo, and the Vandals.

His drumming on the Abandoned Pools record just blows me away.

I read a funny tidbit about him recently. The mayor of Los Angeles gave him the key to the city and declared July 24th Josh Freese day. I swear...you can't make that up.
 
i kept reading john freese and couldn't figure out where i'd heard it. then you said the vandals and i remembered. i haven't heard anything from APC since their first cd 8 years ago or however long it was so i don't know what hes doing with that band. probably nothing that would blow my mind.

Yeah... but HIS just sounds so damned good! And I think he's just a great all around player. I've seen DT a few times and the whole band amazes me but Portnoy is just awesome. Now don't get me wrong. I hate the speed metal double kick. I think it's much more impressive when it is used properly and not just blown from one end of a song to another. Portnoy places his double kicks strategically.
 
i guess i should back up and say that, yes the guy from DT is a MONSTER though

Probably because they sound so damn good, adn ive heard that alot of bands these days are using drum replacement to get every hit sounding great. I thought it was just the kick drum that would have been sampled really, but on listening more i aint too sure if its sampled or not.
Probably just down to a really really great kick drum aswell as the other drums of course.
