Hey guys I'm new here, but have been following these forums for a few weeks.
I have one NT1000, and can probably pick another one up for around $100. So as I'm looking for a set of drum mic overheads, I though this might be an option. What are your opinions? Would they work well as overheads? Thanks.

Sure, they'll work. But they're big and heavy, as you know; you better have a sturdy, heavy stand!

In general, SDCs will yield better results, all other things being equal.

so name a few SDCs for a reasonable price, less than $200. Thanks.

for $100, just buy it. I've heard a pair of Studio Projects B1 work well for some.

For SCDs: the mxl 603s are $199 US for a factory matched stereo pair at MacMidi music (w/free shipping) and Audiogear.com

that's probably the only pair you'll get new for <$200 that would be decent. other options are Oktava MC/MK 012 or Studio Projects C4.

O.K., so go for the Rode for $100, or the mxl's for $200? Is that extra $100 really going to make my overheads sound way better? Thanks again guys for the replies! Peace!

Why dont you try just the one 1000 mic on your kit first and see if it is a sound you will like? And for a 100.00 for a 1000 I dont think I would pass that up. Thats a good price for one.

Some people really like the 603s as overheads, while others think the are too bright. I think it depends on you room and your drums/cymbals. If the budget is tight, and you like the sound of your NT1000, I think you should just get that. It sounds like a heck of a bargain to me.

I have used two NT1000 several times for overheads. Mainly because I have two of them but on a jazz set up they work great. For rock I use my SM 81s most of the time. YES use very rugged stands. They are heavy when you get them up in the air and hanging over a drummer's head.
