did somebody say bungle?

now i finally can compare you to someone....and what a compliment. I think mr. bungle was one of the most masterfully produced music I ever heard. I say 'was' cause I only heard one album by him. I think it was his first album. Lot's of circus like music.

You have some of the same qualities, in that you have a very unique sound...which I know kinda goes against what I just said about Bungle....but your tunes just remind me of a similar level of attention to detail that he had (and still has?). The tempo changes are so damn clean! Abrupt, but in a way that makes you think, and say, 'hey, that is really cool'.

So for the song... Love the slow break @ 1:30 & 3:05, that guitar line is very much the hook of this song. The opening line is very nice musically. Singing is outstanding....wtf was that band looking for...something less unique maybe? The guitar sound at 2:22 is very crunchy...I usually don't like electric guitar but I really like that.

So in summary, your sound is very clean, guitar sound rules, and you have a very original style overall. Like I said....start your own band.

....I always thought that Mr. Bungle shoulda got together and did a tune with Jethro Tull. ....Them two guys coulda made some beautiful music together..... ? :D :D :D :D
j/k Eric.........:D

And with Pink Floyd, they could be like the three tenors.:D :D :D

thanks a lot guys.. Here is the recording chain..

the heavily distorted rhythms was an E Flat guitar, into the J-Station, and then into a Blue Max Compressor.. I doubled it, and added e.q...

the synth sounding leads were guitar, into a Digitech 2112, and then into a BLue Max compressor.. It sounds like I'm doing something hard, but it was no more than 4 different notes on the guitar..

The basic bluesy sounding leads were a Pod Pro into the Blue max compressor..

The bass was a 5 string, into a Sansamp Tri A.C., into the Blue max compressor, and then into a BBE Sonic Maximizer..

The drum sounds were from a Roland TD-8.. I played a 3 piece set of electrics..

David - thanks man! the first ears are always the most surprising..

powderfinger - this tune was vented frustration.. thanks for checking it out man...

Triple M - yeah the lyrics are nothing special.. I make them up on the spot and figure them out afterwards.. I'm surprised you were able to make them out at all.. Thanks Trip!

Track Rat - I'm wondering if it's just the beginning that's bass shy? It seems pretty bassy as it goes on, but I may have done something in the beginning that lowered the bass.. I think I have to remix it.. thanks Trackij!

JR#97 - thanks JR! It's all smoke and mirrors..

SLuiCe - I never heard the Mr. Bungle album, but I love Faith No More's 'The Real Thing.' I have a friend who likes Mr. B so I'll give it a listen.. Some people said it was bass shy, but others said it was a bit bassy.. I must have screwed something up at mixdown.. thanks for checking in Tom.. Any suggestions you have are always appreciated..

scottboyher - thanks man! Some people said there isn't enough bass.. Now I'm confused..

muzeman - hey Pete, I 'usually' don't plan anything out before hand.. What I'll do is record some drum machine beats and jam over them for a little while.. When I come up with something I like, I arrange the drum machine beats and record the guitar.. I then erase the original drum machine and add my own drums, and then the bass.. It's hard sometimes because there is no room for error when your playing along to pre-recorded guitar.. It's mostly trial and error.. a lot of error, and A LOT of punches.. :D The drums always take longer than anything else.. thanks for sitting through this one bud..

kormaniac - thanks for taking the time.. I have heard the Alice thing before, and that makes me happy! :)

Charva - a few people have mentoned the need for low stuff.. I think I have to remix.. thanks man, and I agree about the tits! :D

participant - hey Chad, yeah still using the 788.. The sound takes a beating because I burn a CD through the analog outs, and then rip an mp3 from that.. I didnt use any Waves stuff for this because I cant seem to get it to sound right.. As you can tell, this mix is lower than a lot of other songs people post.. I really wish I could fix that without squashing it to death.. What does AFAIK stand for?? I moxed the vocals about 10 minutes after I recorded them so I think it needs to be remixed.. thanks for checkin' in dude! You better be almost done with your latest! :D

JMarcomb - hey Jeff, thanks for checking it out bro.. IT sounds really low, but it's only E-Flat. :D I guess I was feeling extra low when I played it so that might have helped..

dtb - thanks my man!

Guernica - hey Mike, I think I borrowed some lyrics from our thing..:D Check the line that says, "and when it drops, blowing up entire spots!" That was almost a rap type line I would have used for our collab.. :D  o.k. maybe not.. As far as the drums, I destroyed most of my pads because I was playing with the drum sticks backwards. That's something that I do on a regular drum set, but the electrics couldn't take the abuse.. I'm down to 4 pads.. Basically it's considered a 3 piece set.. A snare, 1 tom, and a bass drum.. I also have a high hat, and a ride/crash.. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors going on with the guitar.. I really wasnt playing anything hard, it just sounded weird.. I listed the gear set up at the top of the page.. thanks for the word Mike! I have been feeling a little bummed about music lately...

mixmkr - great avatar! :D You have a very strong looking hand! What do you mean by 'Goldish' as opposed to 'silver/black'??? Yeah the fidelity suffered? I didnt use any Waves stuff on this because I cant get them to sound right.. I hear you about bass players! :D B++? That's better than I ever did in school! :D thanks mix! Although, I didnt understand most of your post, it made me laugh! :D

Lt. Bob - hey Lt., the general thoughts seem to be a lack of bass.. maybe it's just in the beginning? I think I'll have to remix because I mixed this 10 minutes after I sang it.. I know that is not good to do.. I may have done something to the bass level in the beginning because the end seems to sound very basy to me? I need some serious help.. Also, my mixes are always lower in volume than the average song.. I hate that! thanks for checkin' it out bro.. I'll be speaking to you soon!

erichenryus - thanks a lot man.. I really was feeling a bit bummed about the whole band thing.. One day I'll find some people to jam with I hope.. I really have to check out this mr. bungle.. that guitar line in the slow breaks was originally going to be the notes I sang, but I dont know what happened.. I am trying to start my own band because I am really tired of playing with myself!

Thanks a lot guys, I was bummed for a bit, but I feel a little better now.. :D

you guys rule!

If anyone wants to check out the lyrics, here they are! :D

---------------------------------- distant------------------------------

breaking your systems to its very foundations
blowing the whistle on the whole operation
and when it drops, blowing up entire spots
a need to destroy, the thing that you already got

Never in one million years could I prepare for this
something as tragic as this
and I wonder, does anybody else remember?
I think about it every winter

last time I remember it was something else
everything seemed warmer and the love was felt
doesn't seem too long ago
together in exquisite pain

Where did the time go?
you let it go

if you find remnants of me deep in your heart
pieces of me before I fell apart
throw them away, they will do you no good
sometimes memories feel much worse than they should

:)

Sam,

As usual, very cool and creative piece. I'm with powder, that slow part was my favorite. Being as unimaginative as I am, I would have created the whole song around that part alone.

Twist

No Bass Comments...

:D

My favorite part is the synth line from :33 - :50 or so. I love the guitar break too (when it slows). I'm sure you have obtained plenty of help. I was just stopping by to say that this is my favorite of the songs I've heard you post. "Jennifer" was out in the lead, but it's dwarfed by this...mostly b/c you're singing more. I'm still wanting more bass, but I'm starting to think that that's MY problem. Can you lose LOW end hearing too???? Fuck.

You asked about delude, too. It's beautiful. Is that a harpsichord patch? Man, then the Harp. (am I embarrassing myself by missing these, or what?). Then, what, ... an oboe...or a cello...not sure. Of course, none of that really matters...that's just the way I talk in the clinic. If I were a decent musician, I would LOVE to play over this... *ahem...DAVIDK????*

bater litch :D
Chris

sweet-I didn't like the opening riff that much-but 10 changes later, I don't think I heard it again...you made those synth sounds with that vocal processor? hmm-i got one of those ill have to try it...I like the slow part that started around 1:20-not so much that little guitar riff before the vox but oh well.....man that some crazy shit around 2:30--back into the slow part cool(that guit riff again....)overall i liked this alot-sounded good on my junk computer speakers-not sure i heard a bass either but it didnt bother me-there was definetely low end in the mix. Keep em comin!

GREAT ! :D

The guitars sound awesome, lots of tones and different levels of gain but all mixed evenly,
At times I can hear the bass (during the end solo) but at other times it is harder to make out. You tend to use the bass as a low end anchor, where some people tend to have it heard more (Like a rickenbacher sound) It works fine for your tunes, but there are always some of us going "Wheres the bass?"
The processed solo at the beginning is really niteresting. It most definately sounds lika a synth.
How do you get that vocal sound where it sounds like you are screaming, but you aren't. I can hear the layers of harmonies but it almost sounds compressed or something that gives it a raspy yell sound at times. Very cool!
Another patented Sami tune!
Very enjoyable !

Oh yeah........the drums did their part well also!

:D

Shit! That scared me! Weird-ass shit. Strangely it all fits for me. The guitar is beyond evil again. More evil than ever, though. And another one of these two-faced songs, I hear. Wonderful. You mixed the vocals great on this. Enough volume and not too much effects. And it just gets better towards the end. Evil riffs (and that guitar sound REALLY helps on that). I like the drum-mixing too. Still, on the fast drum-part it tends to sound too even-volumed. I guess it's a velocity thing on the electric-drum-thingy or something. Really, great song again. All these parts fit. Great.

Cool stuff BSabbath.

I find the keyboards a bit annoying at the start, but maybe that was the desired effect!

I really like the transition to the picking guitar part, very classic rock. Shades of Beatles in that part as well, hard to avoid them though. Nice vocals!

The drums are ok sounding, but I'd like to hear some more ambient texture to them. If there were no real cymbals I guess it would be hard to bring those up. If there were a pair of stereo overheads, I'd like to hear them louder.

No Bass guitar again? If it's there I just can't hear it. A melodic bass line in the picking part would really rock.

Summary: I think the guitars are muddy'ing things up in this mix. Better balance on them and probably EQ. Could use a bass guitar. Some more ambience out of the drum kit.

Groovy tune!

Hey Sam
I just played this for my wife and she said

"That guy outta be selling some albums"

She hates everything so this is a huge stamp of approval on the Sami Sound.

:D

thanks again dudes..

There were no synths.. Check this out http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/WNAMM97/DigiTech/2112.html This is what I used for the solos.. I used the harmony setting in a strange way.. I assigned the expression pedal to change intervals, so that sound your hearing is only 4 notes.. This thing is only good for effects because the preamp is totally weak, but the effects are good.. So good, that if you saw what I was doing, you would know how much I suck.. A small child could play that guitar line. :)

twist - I was thinking the same thing about staying close to that one part, I don't know what happened.. thanks for checking it out man..

chrisharris - there were no synths.. please read top of this reply.. :D I seem to be having a bass problem amongst other things.. thanks for checkin out delude too.. That wasn't a harpsichord, but I am working on some harp stuff.. (pretty funny you said that) I'm not really sure which part your talking about, but I used a Roland JV 10-10 and an Alesis QS6.1. Both loaded with an expansion card..

Stratomaster - hey strat, I didnt mean the Digitech Vocal 300, I meant this thing http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/WNAMM97/DigiTech/2112.html I was only playing 4 different notes on the guitar for that part.. It's only good for effects and a few clean tones because the preamp is weak.. I finally bought an SM58, but haven't tried it with the 300 yet.. I hoping for a major improvement.. then again, if my voice is heard more clearly, I would hardly call that an improvement.. thanks for checkin it out bro..

jcmm -"how do you get that vocal sound where it sounds like you are screaming, but you aren't"

a little bit of distortion to toughin it up a bit.. Also, I try to sing at a loud volume whenever possible, so I was overdriving my cheap mic.. not clipping the meters, just slobberin' up the mic! :D Some of the raspyness comes from smoking.. It's not a pretty site when I'm laying a vocal track! :D tell your wife I said 'help!' errr I mean, thanks! damn, I literally laughed out loud just now! :D I shouldn't be typing right now, but at least I'm not driving!

Cranky One - I always look forward to a beat down by you.. :) Cool, nice to hear an improvement on the drums.. They still lack the punch and crispness of yours, but hopefully I can get close one of these months! If you check out the top of this page, you can see what I used for the solo.. thanks Crank! It seems you use the word 'EVIL' a lot when you describe the sound. :D I dont know why that happens, but everything always gets dark..
I sent you a p.m.

Emeric - thanks man, I know your on dial up.. very cool.. Check out the top of the page. There were no synths.. Yeah I was thinking of starting that lead on the second time around, but I don't have any songs that just go from the start, so I took a chance.. I can see how it could sound annoying.. I agree that the drums could sound a lot better.. Then again, you get a great real drum sound.. I have been thinking of taking my recorder to the studio and recording live drums with 4 mics, and then adding the rest of the stuff at home.. Maybe I'll try it sooner than later.. Give me some of your drum tracks to lay music to! :) Something happened with the bass... I played my 5 string, and I thought I had it up in the mix.. I will be remixing this shortly. People seemed to like the guitar sound but you thought it was muddy? I hear general mud across the whole mix when I compare it to other stuff here.. I am going to start being heavier handed with e.q. Also, for the first time in awhile, I didnt use the BBE Sonic Maximizer on the guitars, only the bass... the bass no one can hear.. :D thanks for the word man.. maybe I can help the drums out by boosting some of the highs...

thanks again for the input guys! :)

groovy...

hehe Im not much of aan expert when it comes to mixng music together, and I really hate too reiterate. but then again coming from the inexperienced ear it has more validation :D...j/k...hmmm just the whole thing sounded lower end, thats cool, and maybe thats how come ye cant hear the bass...standing out?...I still hear it though. I can only hope to be able to put together tunes that kick ass as much as this, and all of your other ones do. I really try to refrain from commenting here because as I said Im a newbie :D, but I gotta say your stuff kicks ass (reiteration here<<<)...its been probably 6 months since Ive last been to this site, but I remember from way back then the C#minor tune...a true source of inspiration I think for us all, keep crankin them out man!:D
ps more ramblings...maybe have the vocal scream at the end of that line a little louder...loved feeeding back at the end...the intro really grabs you by the ears you know...excellent composition all around ( again all ramblings :D)

Damn dude. If this style of music was popular right now you'd probably be a superstar! I like a guy who isn't afraid of changes!

Slackmaster 2000

it ROXXX

damn SAM, your sound is aWeSoME!!!!
it's like Ozzy meeting David Bowie in NineInchNails's house.

you're on the right way!

I REALLY LIKE DISTANT.........

i like the shifting guitar rhythms...... moving bar chords...... sounds pretty fluid......
so this is j-station guitars, eh?
i think i could use that sound, doubling makes it nice and thick.....
solo stuff is very inventive, i like this going out on a limb stuff......
the pod pro stuff, i'm not sure, but i think i like the j-station sound even more....
damn, i might just have to pick up one of these j station thingys............

good job on the drums, i thought maybe this was one of those tracks that were written after the song was done......... follows well.....
vocals are nice and spooky, and have a real authentic vibe to them......

there is a flat, one dimensional sound to this mix, i'm not sure why..........
the balance seems right, the tones seem right........
it could just be the mp3 encoding, but i'm listening to everything mp3, so it's apples and apples....

it could be a lack of sheen on the final mix....... how do you master your final thing?
but it's a great song, and great performances.

Day 2...

...still rocks ass...

GAWD that breakdown... don't tell me you listen to Weezer? :) That's fine; just didn't figure you for a math-rock guy... I FREAKIN LOVE THAT BREAKDOWN...

Vox seem low around 2:30...

RHCP-feel in the double-time section...

The breakdown also reminds me of Foo Fighters... they have a song with a similar progression... one of their newer ones...

Could the crash cymbal come up a bit? Seems lost.

BTW "AFIAK" = "As Far As I Know"... standard internet-talk :)

Sammy...I gotta tell ya... I listened to a run thru (2 X's even!) of all your stuff at Nowhereradio, while I was surfing around the net. I don't do that much. Your stuff is good. I like the style, it sounds like you...isn't SO DIFFERENT from song to song, that I enjoyed listening to them all back to back. I was in the mood. If you were MR. Versitility, and recorded every smuck sound under the sun...it would have been less enjoyable. I was just in the mood for a hour of "Sammy"...and the phones where loud too.

thanks dude.

The etude piece..with the lost organ... that makes some nice mood music, even as it is now...

gotta love the dropped tune guitars. think I'll have to try it myself:eek:

my previous post was just garbage... this one reflects my feelings towards your abilities.;)

badassmak - thanks for those words man.. It's surprising someone would remember something by me.. C# minor was one of the last songs I recorded with a 4 track mini disc.. I think it's one of my favorites because there is no singing.. Your probably right about the bass.. The guitars seem to have a lot of low end in them, and the bass is having trouble finiding its spot.. I will have to do something about the mud.. I appreciate the comments badass! :D

Slackmaster2K - that's a polite way of saying 'outdated' :D I'm glad you heard this one because I am embarassed by that Seal thing you heard last.. thanks for checkin' it out man..

grooviejunkie - thanks a lot junkie! I'll be checking out your tune shortly..

GONZO-X - your right about the mix lacking 'sheen.' I didnt do anything mastering.. I bought Waves, but I can't get it to sound right, so I didnt bother.. Basically since I record on an 8 track recorder, I just keep bouncing tracks until I'm done.. In the end, everything but the vocals are on a 2 track mix, then I burn a CD, and rip an mp3 from that.. I'm losing some sound when I burn a disc because I have to go through the analog outs.. That's not why the mix sounds dull, it's just another lame excuse.. :) I really have to get better with e.q and compression... Yeah the J-Station is great.. In a lot of ways, it's better than the Pod at high distortion.. I still like the Pod for certain things though.. I also have a Sansamp, but I only used it on the bass here.. It has a nice sounding distortion too.. thanks for checkin' it out man.. If you want to talk about processors, just shoot.. I have the J-Station, Pod Pro, Sansamp Tri A.C., Korg G1 distortion processor, and a Digietch 2112... Each one has a unique thing I like or dislike about it..

participant - I always complain about peoples electric cymbals being too loud, and then what do I go and do? Make mine too low.. :D I thought they were too low also, but I cant change it because the drums were recorded as 2 track stereo audio.. I think I can just add some other cymbals on some other tracks to get them up there though.. thanks for checkin in Chadij! I'm off to your thread shortly..

mixmkr - hey mix, very cool to hear something like that.. About the clasical tune, oddly enough, the version that's up now is the original version.. I took out the fake strings so it wouldnt clash with DavidK's addition.. The organ was a bad choice, so I just reverted back to the original.. Also, those sounds were before I got the XP-30.. Most of the good string sounds were from the JV 10-10.. (Orchestral 2 expansion card) Yeah detuned guitars rule in my book! :) I find a lot of people dont like them because of all the tuning issues it creates, but all you have to do is set up your guitar for it, and there are a lot less problems.. I dont have expensive guitars, but I have multiple ones all set up for different tunings.. The lowest being B-flat, and the highest is E-flat.. (this tune was E-flat) I do want to get another guitar so I can have it in standard E though... Anyway, thanks for dropping some more comments mix.. I think it's about time you posted another tune!

cool!
