Just wondering what is a preferred way to go about a new mix and whether people go about it differently.

Say you are working with a indie rock band, how would you begin one the tracks are recorded and on the computer?

This is such a wide open question....yes, everyone has their SOP, at least most people who've already been mixing/recording for awhile.

It's one thing if you receive a bunch of tracks that you've never heard before, and you need to mix them...but totally different if you are the one who did all the recording, editing, etc...and you've been listening to those tracks all along.
In the first scenario...I woulds just push up all the faders equally just to hear what I have...and then slowly start working level balances and pan balances until there was a pretty decent rough mix going, and then move to more specific things like EQ and comps and whatnot.
In the second scenario...I'vef already been hearing the tracks over and over, and have probably worked up a good cue mix as I went along...so by the time I'm ready to *mix*...most of the rough work is out of the way.

What miroslav says. Push the faders up and get a basic mix going so you can hear the song and all its elements together. Nothing bugs me more than someone who starts by soloing things and hacking away at the eq before they have a context.
