I am new to MIDI and I am wanting to purchase a midi keyboard and a nice midi sound card for my pc. I have been looking at the M-AUDIO equipment and I like the prices on it alot but I am not sure if these pieces will work together.

Audiophile 2496 PCI interface MIDI IN and MIDI OUT

Radium61 61 keyboard USB

both made by M-AUDIO

If I purchase the keyboard will I need that interface? If I wanted to purchase the interface and not that keyboard, what are some different models that would work nicely with that interface. I plan on using Steinberg Hypersonic for my MIDI and I really want a nice keyboard just not one with all the built in junk on them. Just 61 key w/ MIDI IN

Thanks

You can use the Radium by itself to control soft synths and record MIDI data in a sequencer on a USB-equipped PC, but you can't record any audio in this manner unless you have an onboard audio device already (which, if you do, will not be a very good one).

If you get the Audiophile you will have a very good two-channel audio interface plus a MIDII interface. A MIDI interface isi a MIDI interface. Any keyboard that sends MIDI data out a MIDI Out jack can be used with the Audiophile.

When you say you want a controller with "just 61 keys w/MIDI In" to play Steinberg Hypersonic (which I'm unfamiliar with, but I assume must be a softsynth), you must mean MIDI Out. A controller that has no onboard sounds has little use for a MIDI In port, and would be useless without a MIDI Out port.
