A mic or a mic preamp?

Being the cheapskate I am, I have $100 to invest. I'm looking to make my drums sound better, especially the kick drum.

Here's an idea of what sound I have now with all of my equipment. I'm micing the kick with an SM57 right now. The question: Should I invest my money in an AT-25 bass mic OR should I purchase a single ART MP Tube Preamp? Or do the drums sound fine?

Do you have a compresser ? If not, that would be a good investment because it will allow you to record the drums at a hot level and control the dynamics-limiting. Your kick drum sounds good as well as your snare but your hi-hats don't have any presence. Are you using an overhead mic ? Drums require a lot of mics....it's a good thing I'm a keyboard player and I don't need a lot of expensive mics. Tube or solid state pre-amps are neccessary if you are going straight into the recorder because the pre's are not good quality and don't give the mic enough gain. I have an old Sony dynamic mic that was crap before I bought a preamp, now it's used all the time. I predict the next generation recorders will have much better preamps.

Wide Awake,

What kind of pre do you use? I'm shopping for one.

1. What equipment did you use to record this stuff? Mixer? Preamps? Other mics?

2. What processing did you use on this mix, EQ settings? What did you do on the kick EQ-wise/processing-wise?

MGS...I am using a PreSonus Bluetube. It's stereo and pretty reasonably priced-$150, no wallwart. I've never used another preamp so I can't compare it to anything else. I run my keyboards, drum machine, and mics thru it. I used to record on cassette tape and when I bought a digital recorder a few months ago I loved the clarity and increased headroom and lack of hiss but.....everything is soooo clean, especially digital keyboards and this takes the " edge " off things--. I'm sold on tube pre's but I think solid state may be good to have as well. I recommend getting a stereo unit if you record in stereo.
