I am an old rocker (in bands since 1967) but brand new to recording. I obviously fall short of knowing the answer(s) to the following multipart question:

If you had a bluesy type singer (not TOO hard but with a definite edge to his voice), AND they had an SM57 and an AT 4050 available; WHICH would you use to RECORD with ? Secondly, if you were to add a mike to these two for capturing that bluesy edge, which might it be ? Would you simply say that one of the two aforementioned would suffice ?

Thanks so much for opining !

the 4050 should more than suffice. I don't have as much experience in this area, but one of the "experts" should be along to help you out!

think that either of the 2 should work. the "pro's" here will tell you that the sm57 needs a really good pre-amp to work well.

do a scratch track with both of them then listen to each one in the mix and decide which sound works the best.

I'm far from an expert, but like the sound of a decent condensor on vox, more so than a dynamic. Some people have good luck with dynamics. I just prefer the concensor myself...and I have a 4040. Try them both, but you might find the 4050 captures more of the sound, with less work.

The 4050 should work just fine, but during mixdown, try running the vocal thru a distortion box to put a little (just a little) grit on the vocal track. I use a SansAmp TRI-O.D., on the Fender "Tweed" setting, and the "Drive" cranked up just a little bit.

The 4050 is just a little too clean for most bluesy vocals.

you could try doing a track with the at and then have the singer redo the track with the 57 and blending them as you see fit. it will give you more option and versatility as well as giving you the ability to thicken the vocal track up some and plus you can even decide which mic to use just by listening to both a/b incase you only want to do 1

Thank you so much; I have picked up a lot of very useful information. I guess I CAN go with the AT4050 to capture the actual vocal with all its subtle nuances and THEN post process for the final blues effect boost.

Thanks again for your help; I SINCERELY appreciated it.
