As the title says! I have little to no experience but am eager to learn. I want to start learning this side of things hopefully record a demo for my band and grow from there. Where do I start? I've been thinking MacBook Pro 2.5g i5, 7200RPM external via FireWire, couple of fresh 4gb memory sticks and a 4-6 line in interface... What do you suggest? Should I go 2.9 i7? Then I'd be unable to do the external or interface for now. I've been ghosting for days lol.

If you can pick up the 2.5 i5 and an interface for your budget do it, sounds like a great deal. Just make sure you get a decent interface, which I doubt you can do straight away based on your budget. Always purchase the best equipment you can afford. If you are a couple hundred dollars short of something that would suit you way better than what you can afford WAIT and SAVE. It's easier said than done, but very important. Oh, BTW, if you are going to be using a firewire HD, make sure you get a USB 2 or 3 interface!!!! A 2.5 i5 with 4-8GB ram will serve you well for some time!

Good Luck!!!

2.5ghz i5 will take a lot.
I have a 2.3ghz i5 which I guess is previous generation and it's belter. I haven't found it's limit yet. I am using SSD drives though; Not sure if that makes a difference.
If the budget is restrictive take a look on ebay for the 2012 MBP range. I have absolutely no desire to upgrade mine.

Why line in interface? Are you using external preamps or a mixer? If the answer is "no", or "what?" then you want an interface with mic preamps, most likely.

I'm guess USD, but just to be sure, what currency are you talking about?

USD lol:) I can get the i5 for $957. I'd Be game for the SSD but not sure what specs? 128gb etc? I found new WD 7200 for about 150 and a line 6 interface about the same... Would the 5400 be ok for the time being?

What interfaces would you recommend? Would a USB 3.0 HDD be better? Or solid SSD? (See post above please)

Thank you guys sooo much!!

The line in thing was just an option on most I've seen. Thank you so much for your reply!!

You only want one device that has a lot of I/O on firewire. It can't handle multiple large transfer devices such as an external HD and an audio interface. I would say go with firewire for the drive and USB for the interface. If you can afford the 7200rpm drive go with that, you will be fine for a while with your processor speed and memory, but you should upgrade to a SSD down the line, worry about that later though.

I'm using a Mackie ONYX BlackJack and I am very satisfied. I can't outright suggest an interface without knowing exactly what you will be using it for.

Basically some demo stuff to begin with. Simplest I can get away whilst still achieving some decent quality. Guitar, vox, bass, backup vox(?) probably e-drums just to limit processor demand etc. I really would like to see how well I do with it before going too too deep in hard/software. Some people have the ear others, not so much... I don't want to just stick a mic in the middle of the room you know? I want do some actually mixing see how it goes.

You are being too vague... Do you plan on running the instruments line in directly to the interface, do you plan on micing them. How many tracks do you NEED to record at once? Do you want to do a full live setup, or can you record track by track.

If you are looking to just run the guitar/bass line in and processing them in your DAW, you will need an interface with the option for HI-Z inputs. The BlackJack has these.

If you need to record the whole band as one, you are going to need at least 4 inputs you can use at the same time, with phantom power if you are using condenser mics. The BlackJack has 2 inputs, they can be used at the same time and both have phantom power. The ONYX preamps are also the best pres at the BlackJack's price point($150), IMO.

Hopefully, since you are on such a low budget, and don't even have the computer yet, you will be fine recording track by track. With your budget this is pretty much going to be a must if you want to get going right away and not save up longer.

If you don't mind me asking, if you don't even have a drummer, why are you so concerned about recording your own demo? It's a pretty big investment time and money wise for not even having a full band. For what you're looking to spend, you could have your demo professionally recorded, with a studio drummer, and mastered. Just saying...
