A little design help please

I posted this over on John's site, but thought I would post it here as well for maximum coverage.

Here is what I am considering so far:

1: I have placed my desk back from the wall to allow maximum distance so as not to get bad bass reflections.

2. The space in front of the desk can be used for any treatment...including building a cloth facade wall with a bunch of hangers behind it.

3. I intend to build some of John's slot resonators on each side


Some Questions:

1. I have shown my monitors on stands behind the desk...am I right in thinking that this would be better than right next to the computer screens on the desk?

2. Is the lack of symmetry toward the back of the room likely to cause a big issue?

3. How can I best use my alcove areas for bass management?

4. How wide do I have to make my rear absorber? If it is too wide it will cover the stairs

I promise that most of you know way more about acoustics than I do.

Okay...I have a better way of putting my question.

If I was outfitting a small bedroom with wall unit acoustic treatment, I would know exactly what to do because that topic is widely covered everywhere.

If I was going to be doing a lot of construction I would know exactly what to do because that topic is covered here extensively.

I am looking for wisdom in using cheaper "bedroom type" treatments to my unusual-shaped room.

GH, part of the reason you've not gotten any responses here, is that several people who are qualified to answer this type of question are also involved with several other BBS's - John moderates here and has his own site, which you've been to - I moderate at RO and at John's site in the construction forum, and I have yet to see a better answer on general acoustics and specifically speaker design than those from Thomas Barefoot, who also posts here and other BBS's, and moderates the Speaker forum for John.

I just checked the design forum at John's site, and can't think of anything that hasn't already been covered.

If you're not willing to take the word of people with the kind of backgrounds represented there, then don't waste your money on hiring an acoustician - you probably wouldn't believe him either.

That last comment was not intended as a slam, just pointing out that you've already gotten some very good advice from some of the same people that would have answered HERE... Steve

When I posted these messages, I had not yet received much response at John's site...since then, I have been very happy with information that he has shared with me.

I am completely at a loss on why you would say that I "don't believe" what you guys are saying to me. I have a couple of times asked for clarification, but for the most part I am taking to heart all advice that is coming my way from those more experienced than I.

I am totally gratified that pro level people even take the time to talk to me.

Richard, sorry if I sounded like I was ragging on you - I didn't notice the relative dates on some of the posts. Sometimes I get spread a little thin with less time than I would like, and I hate leaving anything out of a post that could be helpful - kind of a bad combination, huh?

Anyway, I hope the info you got at John's works for you -

Besides, we HAVE to help less-experienced guys - the other pro's already KNOW it all... :=) (That was a joke, BTW)
