O.K... I'll concede and look into moving the Leslie sound aroond to get it more to your linking... :p (but you're still not getting my Taylor.. ) And I could adjust the speed of the Leslie.. but the cheap (read "free") plugin I'm using for that effect won't save my settings!!! I've messed with it, and re-downloaded it,.. but the dumb thing just forgets what I set it to, and goes back to the defaults, whenever I close it. I have a couple other "glitchy" plugins.. I got one that just kinda "forgets" it's settings every once in a while, and goes back to the default... needless to say, that ticks me off... :p

If anyone's got a cheap (read "free" again) VST Leslie plugin I can use, then feel free to pass it along.. :p (P.S... the one I'm using is made by mda, so don't bother sending me that one again... it's the only one I was able to find on the internet.)

By the by,... The vocal sound is like that partially because he has a very strained, "grainy" voice.. it sounds like that in person (almost)... and on top of that,... it's compressed all to hell... :D so that prolly has somethin' to do with it to... :p

But the more I think of it, and listen to it,.. the more I think most of the vocal issues (including the BGV problems that I'm hearing) are the result of proximity on the C-1... I may have to re-track a bunch of stuff... and if I do.. you'll be the first to know... :p

WATYF, your rating just dropped man ... :D ... that guitar sound is ... well ... not good... :) ... you should of brocken the string while he wasn't looking or something ... this sounds more like live recording for some reason ... I understand the singer is probably focuses on "attittude" and it comes through ... but some attension should be paid to intonation ... no? ...

recording aside ... good song ... I might still it for our worship ...
cheers ...

oh ye, ditto on mixmkr dog... haha... :D ... on the last picture he looks like a pitbull to me ...

I liked Fed's suggestion of breaking a string. And if he had spares, then pull a Pete Townshend and smash it. It really sounded like a Walmart guitar.

I would do my best to take care of any issues preventing a singer from backing away from a mic. Have you tested to see if backing off would be any worse? The singer had a little bit of trouble with some of the high notes I thought.

Musically I thought it was a rather pretty song. The rhythm guitar part had opportunities to change up here and there but didn't. I think that would help make things a little more interesting.

Heard small pops @ :29 and 4:09. There were other spots too. Gotta get away from the mic. Maybe someone's mentioned that? :D

yeah...after the last thing of yours i listened to WATF i was expecting a bit more. brutal honesty here..

the acoustic guitar sounds like complete ass...as do the vocals (esp. at the beginning).

the guitar sounds like it is cheap AND recorded with a cheap mic...just has this distant quality that isn't typical of a slick/christian tune.

the vocals sound like they were recorded through the same cheap mic...through a PA system. Like mix mentioned...it shouldn't sound like a microphone, it needs to be more transparent.

Once you get into the higher register it sounds better...but, still too "there" in a fake way. not a commercial vocal sound - i wouldn't hammer that in...except that you seem to like it so much ;)

Production wise you are on the right track if you take some of the other advise....except I think the kick drum sound is too much for this song. And clean up the rhythm in a few places.

Only reason i am ragging you is becuase I know you can take it, for one. And, moreso becuase I have heard other stuff in the past from you that was at least 50% better than this. you could be one of the homerecording greats...this is unacceptable as is. ;)

LOL... man.. I'm gettin' toasted here... My ears were burnin' before I even clicked on the thread... :p

that's ok... you're right.. I can take it better than most...

but remember... this ain't my stuff... I didn't play a note. It ain't my guitar.. it ain't my voice. I just did the best with what he offered me. (the "best" being my best.. which is not to be confused with thee best... :p ) But I can tell you one thing... that acoustic guitar sounds even worse in person (if you can imagine that  ) it really does sound, as you put it, like a Walmart guitar... I offered my Taylor a few times, but I dunno... maybe he's partial to his. But I think the final sound turned out "ok" compared to how it sounds "live".

And I was waitin' for someone to pick up on the tempo probs... (yet another one of his punk tendancies.. :p ) He drifts in a couple places. I also caught the popping "p"s in a few places and asked if he wanted to re-track, but he didn't think it was that big of a deal...

lol... man... next time I post something with my name on it, I'm gonna get a helluva lot more involved in the performance aspects... :p oh well.. I was just lookin' for mix comments.. fortunately, I don't have to care aboot the performance issues.. :D But now I'm kinda regretting that I posted "good" stuff before, cause now, apparently, everyone's expecting so much of me... what's up with that? :p I don't want expectations.. I can't handle the pressure... somebody just kiss my ass and tell me it sounded "great" just for old times sake....

anyone?????

P.S. New mp3 is up... I nixed the Leslie on the verses... (hope you're happy mix.. :p ) and totally redid the mix of the vocals (effects and all) and messed with it till I was basically sick of it. It don't get any better than that... (without totally retracking it). I'm ready to call this one done as soon as he gets over here and puts the elec. git tracks in it... oddly enough, I'm sure he'll think it sounds great as it is... :p

Man WATYF: You sound like you're about to pull your hair out on this one. Do me a favor before you do that.

TURN THE VOCAL UP FOR THE FIRST 1:45

hehehehe...forget EQ, forget Compression...just turn it up.

ORRRR...turn the git down at the beginning. I don't care which one.

:D

Love this tune (from 1:45 on).

YES...ALL MY VOCALS ARE TOO LOUD, BECAUSE I'M DEAF, SO PLEASE TURN UP THE VOCAL FOR US DEAF FOLK.

:D
chris

oh wait...I forgot something. THE GUITAR SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER WITHOUT THAT LESLIE THING...

(I know you killed it for Mix, not me, but MAN is it an improvement).

:D
:D

Next time, MAKE him use your guitar. Just lie...say something about phase flux's and room modulations and how only YOUR guitar can be recorded in your house...

White lies are ok for the limited purpose of improving songs. But you did a really good job with what you had...I mean, it actually sounds good to me....really good...

'specially w/o the dang Leslie

:D

 **AAAAARRRRGHHHHHHH*****

**WATYF pulls his hair out...

that's it... screw this.. I'm gonna go have some ice cream...

vocals still a little low in the beginning...and having trouble cutting thru.. the gtrs do sound better....I'll give you that...

I'd take a little more powerful an entrance on the drums, and the bass gtr...there is one, right?.. I'd almost bet there isn't...but, I'd turn it up too....seems to me I thought I heard some higher register riffs on it...but...who knows??

I think you "polished" this one as best you could, and probably time to move on...like you suggest. A total retrack would probably be best for further improvements.

On the vocals...what is missing...and probably with most of the instruments...is they lack a "space" to reside in. There is no "naturalness" to anything...and the environment is not there.

oh...I hear the timing flubs on the drums now and then too;)

no bass yet... (I don't even want to think aboot that.. :p) and the timing flubs are his guitar... the drums are a loop. :p no wait.. I mean.. the drums are me playing in perfect timing.. yeah.. that's it....

see.. this is my problem.. I have no idea how to get that... everything I mix is just one big pile of mud... what's up with that?

that's it!! I hate music...! I give up..! anyone want my Taylor???

anyone???

*mix raises his hand any waves it aroond...

pick me..pick me

the answer....a variety of decent reverbs, and a variety of settings on the different instruments....and knowing when too much is toooo much.....like I should talk!

I'll easily use two verb settings on drums (snare and toms...and even a lil' bit on kick too), one on vocals...another on the bg vocals...each gtr has it's own reverb.....keys, etc. Now granted, I may record some of the instruments with reverbs, but I like having a lot of them. Also, stereo verbs sound best to me..over mono...and especially panned reverbs..unless used as an effect...like opposite the instrument, panned hard....

by the by - scroll up through this thread...there are a LOT of smileys.

what taylor do you have by the way?

i have a k14c...i kinda want a collings..

i love the taylor, esp. the way it plays. but, sometimes it is "brighter" than I am looking for.

414CE... yeah.. it's too bright for some things.. but it's still sweet...

and yes... I have been accused, in the past, of using profuse amounts of smileys... but that's ok... it conveys my personality quite accurately... "profuse" :p oh.. wait.. I mean.. "smiley". :)

Mix... whenever I use verbs, it just tends to widen the sound out more, and make it take up even more space. I still don't understand how they get each instrument to sit in its own "space". I mean... even when I hard pan stuff, it's almost as if it's still takin' up too much space... maybe I just need to buy more gear.... yeah... that's it... :p

P.S. Chris... I put up the last mix of this dumb tune.. :p I raised the vox so much that even your deeef self should be able to hear it... :D

WATYF:

I don't know if it's louder, or if I just finally figured out the words after listening to it 50 times, but I call it "done" on the vocal problem.

I know I said this before, but the git really does sound good...for any guitar.

Nice...thanks fer helpin' out the deafies.

hey, i thought i just might add something here...
not sure if your friend plans on doing anything with the song, but listening's sake i would throw a simple bass line in there... i dont believe i heard anything... perhaps there was one lurking in the shadows, but i dont htink so.
wes mentioned that the kik was a little much, my thoughts exactly, but i dont think it sounds bad, jsut needs a little pitch to match with it.
..get your name in there on the performers credits :)

Sorry to get here so late on this...

...actually downloaded the original... but got here too late to comment! So, version 2:

Voice has mucho mucho lows on it... could you roll off everything below 150Hz on it? It's that rumbly, low content that just eats up headroom and fights with the guitars...

Ah, that was just the first verse... voice is more balanced later...

Would be cool with different instrumentation at the 3:11 mark.

Something that JR mentioned in another thread for better separation: roll off the lows on each side of the stereo acoustic track at a slightly different point e.g. 175Hz on one, 140 on the other... it will give a better sense of separation. You could also put a 10ms delay on one of them... it would remove the feeling that they're just coming "out of the middle" of the stereo field.

Cool song; the guy sounds like he fancies himself another Scott Stapp :)

Couldn't hear any mooses singing bgvs, tho   :p :p ;)

;) Chad

eh hem, still learning the ropes here...
better start checking to see if there is a second page, guess my dumbass bass ( <-- thats kinda wierd) comment was unneeded, oh well.
liked the song allright, not the genre. you said he was a former punk singer? ...nah, couldnt be. ;)
