That SMART guy.
Lately I haven't played all that much guitar. I just haven't played in the last year, except for a few licks we needed on one of the songs we were recording.

But sunday, I took up my guitar again. I got a fairly nice setup, an american strat to a Vtwin to a JC55. You can get some nice sounds out of that.

But the fender is bothering me. It doesn't sound as laid-back jazzy as I want. I don't play all that much, so fancy fusion stuff is out of the question. I like a strat, but I'd prefer one of them darker jazzguitars. So I guess the strat has to go. I'll probably get a good price for it, there isn't one scratch on it, and the price has gone up in the last years.

So I guess I'm looking for a jazzguitar. Anyone got an idea? I've played an Ibanez artstar (equiped with flatwounds) a while ago which was very much to my liking. But I haven't played any others. The price of the other jazzguitars Ibanez offers is way out of my range. I'm thinking about 900$. Epiphone is in that range too I guess?

Any comments from anyone?

I've got an Ibanez AS80 with flatwound 11s on and I love it. You can get a lot of different tones out of it, from jazz box to almost Les Paul type sounds. I picked it up for $425 USD on Ebay.

The AS80 is the same guitar as the AS120, except the 120 has block inlays and gold hardware.

I've got almost the same set-up as you. Mesa V-twin into a Roland JC120. With the clean setting on the V-twin and a neck position humbucker, you can get some decent jazz tones. Neck single coils don't cut it. I get the best results with a Sansamp into my JC120.

Lame thrower... sounds good. $425 is affordable...

JR, what guitar do you use? Any recommendations, or would anything with a humbucker work? (I used to have a Ibanez Jem FP, and it was ok with the humbucker, but still not jazzy enough....)(Guess I answered that last question already... hehe....)

I've got a PRS clone with EMG's. It's ok.. for a while I had an Ephiphone Dot that sounded pretty damn good after I had the pick-ups dipped in wax. As far as humbuckers go, I think it just depends. I had a high end Kramer that sucked for jazz...to ummm... 80's hairband sounding.
