I like the fact that this is still called a BBS. It's like 1993 all over again.

I've gotten some good advice occasionally trolling this board. I spent a few days over the holidays holed up in a cabin, drinking bourbon and writing and recording songs. A few of these were recorded on a Korg PXR4 4 track, others on a Zoom digital 8 track. No mics that cost more than $40 were used in the recording of these songs. Some were written while watching the Giants-Patriots game. And when it's cold outside, in the evening, I like my bourbon with tea.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/def... Shit, I'm getting a little off-topic here...

From your description I expected punk-inspired stuff. I stand corrected.

I think it sounds really good, but I'm just listening on some computer speakers right now. I like the vocals a lot.

Thanks!

Maybe I should've been more clear - the songs are mostly acoustic guitar and vocals. I was mixing on headphones and crappy computer speakers, but don't think it turned out terrible.

Yeah man, very nice. Cool sounds coming out. Your voice really works with this and your harmonies fit perfect. I would want a little more bass in that acoustic guitar to fill up all the space that you have down there. The cool little electric guitary sounding thing phasing thingy works good too. (I'm listening to Answering Machine.)

I forget we ever met. Very nice. Your rhythm is spot on, something I wish I could have! You make your limited equipment sound good! Goes to show performance goes a long way. Keep up the good work!:)

I listened to the first tune. Real good performance there all the way around. The only problem I heard with it is the guitar is too loud in the mix. Bring it down a hair and it will sound much better here.

I liked the first one so much, I'm off to hear the rest! Thanks for sharing.:)

Well alright, ok. That is my treat for today. Thank you so very much Alex, great stuff. Lace this music into a tv series and I'm there! Your studio has a real good sound to it too. Care to share your sound design?

The only critical thing I can say about the other three songs is the last one also had the instrument too loud for the vocal but other than that, awesome.

Thanks for the kind words. I have always had a habit of burying vocals with guitars, and am working on it.

As for my setup, the instruments were (I think):
-Harmony H162 acoustic
-random beat-up Kay acoustic
-some cheap tremolo pedal
-Yamaha Clavinova
and an Alesis Quadrasynth

I used a few different mics:
-GLS Audio 57 clone
-Naiant MSH-1
-CAD GXL2200
-CAD something else. small diaphragm condensor.

also:
-ART TPSII mic pre
-Alesis Microverb

all going into:
-Zoom HD8 (answering machine, world trade center, forgot we ever met)
-Korg PXR4 (ashtabula)

and now that I remember more, I recorded the guitar and vocals for "ashtabula" with the built-in internal mic on the PXR4.

anyway.

Thanks for all the kind words! More bass in the guitar sounds right, some of this stuff sounds a little tinny with nothing holding down the bottom end. And I will work on mixing, maybe get some half-decent monitors instead of using cheap headphones.
